Finished The Lover, by Margurite Duras.

The young girl in The Lover is a catalyst for desire: She understands this at an early age through her affair with an older man. It is this desire that will come to rule her life. Duras layers her short novel with memories (and probably with half-memories). In fact, as a semi-autobiographical work of art, it managed to enlarged my understanding of how memories can transfigure into a fuller understanding of how we are affected by them - especially, as in my case - as I have aged. There is so much that can be said about the greatness of this novel.

I loved re-reading this novel. The qualities that initially attracted me to Duras's writing 40-45 years ago have become strengthened. I'll be re-reading all her work that I own.

I'm now almost finished with another writer I loved in my youth: Anna Kavan. I'm loving Asylum Piece.

Finally getting around to "Manhattan Transfer". I'm not usually a fan of multi-character/multi-viewpoint stuff, but this doesn't seem too arduous. Maybe a bit too much influenced by Joyce, but not unbearable.

I think that some authors are more influenced by colors than I am. I have/had a friend with red/green color blindness who always said, "I'm not color blind. There's blue and then the other colors." For me, I have a mental quirk that despite seeing all the colors there is only yellow and the various other colors that are not worthy of my notice.

Finished my re-read Anna Kavan's novel Asylum Piece, a writer I've enjoyed for many, many years. A classic piece of Literature.

Now reading Letter From an Unknown Woman, a novella by Stefan Zweig. If you love Literature, then you simply must read Zweig!!!

Which was good. Nice bit of Edinburgh history intertwined with the plot.

Then I read Freedom's Landing by Anne McCaffrey. A underwhelming SF story that's more implausible romance than SF. There are three more, but I won't be getting them.

And then I read Stone Unturned by Lawrence Watt-Evans. The most recent in his Ethshar series, and the usual good fun.

Next was The Phoenix Code by Catharine Asaro. A tale of androids that reminded me of Freedom's Landing in that it was really a romance. I had expected more.

Now I'm reading A Room Full of Bones by Elly Griffiths. The fourth in her Dr Ruth Galloway series. Good so far.

Almost finished with Letter From an Unknown Woman, a WONDERFUL collection of four novellas, by Stefan Zweig. Highly recommended, if you enjoy stepping away from genre fiction for a few days.

I like to simultaneously read a collection of short stories while also reading a major work (such as the literary work above). I have one story left in Together, Apart, by Ben Hoffman.

When I finish the two above, I plan to read The Dry Heart, by Natalia Ginzburg. I've read a number of her works, but have yet to read this one.

Happy reading, you scoundrels!

Im reading HEX by Thomeas Olde Heuvelt, it's a story about Black Springs a town haunted by the Black Rock Witch, who has her eyes and mouth sewn shut.

In order to contain the curse the elders of the town try to cut themselves off from the outside as much as possible, discouraging people who want to move to the town, as part of the curse means that anyone who lives at Black Springs can never leave (at least for no more than a couple of weeks)

Even though it's a fairly dark subject matter there are some funny moments in it (so far), the Witch has a habit of just appearing in random places within the town, in the street, peoples homes etc and she will just stand there for random amounts of time, at one point she appears on someones front lawn as they are having a mini festival meaning outsiders are present, so they throw a sheet over her

Finished the two I had on my list. (Ref post #32201).

Now reading The Dry Heart, by Natalia Ginzburg.

After that, I plan to read The Heart Keeps Faulty Time, a chapbook by Siân Griffiths, just now purchased from Amazon and liberated for any ebook reader I own that I wish to put it on.

The one above will be followed by Ballerina, by Patrick Modiano.
