^ It will hopefully improve with firmware updates. At least there is an option out of the box now.
I am right now trying to gather my courage to root something for the first time in my life: the Nook ST. It's a horrifying prospect for me, as so many things can go wrong when you have no clue about what you are doing.

Frankly it sounds like the install of APKs works because they forgot to disable it, rather than that it is a feature they intended.
