Note it’s a repeat deal with a different ISNB/ASIN so check your library before you purchase. I nearly got caught by that.

Detective by Arthur Hailey (he of Airport and Hotel fame) is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
Detective-Sergeant Malcolm Ainslie, a former Catholic priest, is about to start his vacation when a call comes in from death row. Before serial killer Elroy Doil is taken to the electric chair, he wants to make a full confession to the cop who put him away. To close the books on additional murder cases in which Doil is a suspect, Ainslie drives four hundred miles to Florida State Prison.

Although Doil confesses to ten other homicides, he insists that he didn’t commit the crime for which he will be executed the following day: the grisly slaying of a city commissioner and his wife. In his search for the real killer, Ainslie will discover that the upper levels of Miami’s government—including some of his closest colleagues—are more corrupt and dangerous than he ever imagined.

Just got an email that Delphi Classics has just come out with a new collection of the works of Carolyn Wells. And, to celebrate the release, they are offering the first title in the Fleming Stone series, The Clue, for free, either in ePub or Kindle formats.

Here's a link to the webpage for the free titles - links are near the bottom of the page: https://mailchi.mp/delphiclassics/77...7?e=f362d76207

The full collection is also available at a reduced price right now, although as usual (sadly) the US edition is restricted to less than full content due to the crazy US copyright laws. I'll probably wait until I'm in Canada sometime and buy the full version then.

I also noticed on their splash page that Delphi has a coupon offer going on right now - you can get 20% off a purchase of more than $15 of ebooks using the coupon code "bluebell" (without the quotes).

The Darlington Letters by Tracy/Teresa Grant is a recent (2018) title in the Charles and Mélanie Fraser/Malcolm and Suzanne Rannoch series, which confusingly started with the Frasers, then due to publisher issues continued with the same characters, but renamed as the Rannochs, and then continued at some point as what may be self-pub (NYLA?).

I've read pretty much all of the titles in this series so far (not going to swear I haven't missed one or two), and have enjoyed them all. So although I haven't read this one, which I haven't seen on sale before, I'm posting it because it's free as the BN Readout of the weekend, and if I wait until I have a chance to read it and vouch for it specifically, it probably won't be free anymore. If this offends the moderators too much, that I haven't had time to read it yet, and they are not willing to consider that I have read and liked the rest of the series, then they can please just delete my post.

The BN Readout free price has not yet been matched at Kindle US or Kobo US, but it usually does get matched sometime over the weekend, so if you prefer those retailers, you can keep an eye out. Also, if you prefer Kobo, you can also use the Kobo price match - I've done this maybe 15 or 20 times, and have always gotten the promised refund - although I do keep screenshots of everything, and did have to use them one time when the refund was initially refused.

Anyway, here is info on The Darlington Letters:

BN: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the...=2940161944486
Kobo US (for possible price match): https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-darlington-letters
Kindle US (to watch for price drop): https://www.amazon.com/Darlington-Le...dp/B07J6DXWMD/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Glittering chandeliers reveal dark secrets…

Former spies and London society favorites Malcolm and Mélanie Suzanne Rannoch are back home, and delighted that their dear friends, Raoul O'Roarke and Laura Tarrington, are finally free to marry. But what should be an occasion for joy is soon marred by a blackmail attempt. To aid an old friend, the Rannochs must resume a life of espionage and adventure, facing an attack at the London docks and infiltrating a Mayfair ball in disguise to retrieve stolen letters. They soon realize the stolen documents they seek could upend the British government—and the secrets Malcolm and Mélanie uncover hit unexpectedly—and dangerously—close to home…

"Shimmers like the finest salons in Vienna." —Deborah Crombie

"Meticulous, delightful, and full of surprises." —Tasha Alexander

"Glittering balls, deadly intrigue, sexual scandals. . .the next best thing to actually being there!"—Lauren Willig

"A superb storyteller."—Deanna Raybourn

Young Mycroft by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Anna Waterhouse is $1.99 in the Amazon.com daily deal.

Quote:
Fresh out of Cambridge University, the young Mycroft Holmes is already making a name
for himself in government, working for the Secretary of State for War. Yet this most British of civil servants has strong ties to the faraway island of Trinidad, the birthplace of his best friend, Cyrus Douglas, a man of African descent, and where his fiancée Georgiana Sutton was raised.

Mycroft’s comfortable existence is overturned when Douglas receives troubling reports
from home. There are rumors of mysterious disappearances, strange footprints in the sand, and spirits enticing children to their deaths, their bodies found drained of blood. Upon hearing the news, Georgiana abruptly departs for Trinidad. Near panic, Mycroft convinces Douglas that they should follow her, drawing the two men into a web of dark secrets that grows more treacherous with each step they take...

Barbara Hambly's A Free Man of Color is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
It is 1833. In the midst of Mardi Gras, Benjamin January, a Creole physician and music teacher, is playing piano at the Salle d'Orleans when the evenings festivities are interrupted—by murder.

Ravishing Angelique Crozat, a notorious octoroon who travels in the city's finest company, has been strangled to death. With the authorities reluctant to become involved, Ben begins his own inquiry, which will take him through the seamy haunts of riverboatmen and into the huts of voodoo-worshipping slaves.

But soon the eyes of suspicion turn toward Ben—for, black as the slave who fathered him, this free man of color is still the perfect scapegoat...
