Oliphant, Margaret: Autobiography and Letters. v1. 14 Sept 2009

Margaret Oliphant (1828-1897) was a prolific, and popular Victorian author. However, her life was a continual struggle personally, professionally and financially. By the final years of her life, when she undertook her autobiography, she had been widowed for decades and her children were all dead. Heartbroken, and alone, the vivacity and wit that gave her novels such warmth had all but deserted her; she was left full of self-doubt, wondering if she had achieved anything with her life, and longing for the death she fervently hoped would reunite her with the people she had loved and lost.
This tragic story provides an illuminating insight into the Victorian publishing industry, and the life of a special writer whose reputation lives on. Despite her fears, her work has continued to give pleasure to the generations that came after her, providing a literary legacy she would have been happy to know was still appreciated.
As well as the Autobiography, this text contains a selection of letters predominately covering Oliphant's final years, a list of published works, and a further list of her articles for 'Blackwood's Magazine' with which she had a long relationship. (The magazine is generally referred to by it's nickname 'Maga'.)
This text originated with a public domain PDF text. It has been proofread, but I would be grateful to hear of any errors that remain.
