Corridors of Death is the first in the Robert Amiss series by Ruth Dudley Edwards. I'm quite fond of this series, and was lucky enough to pick up most of these titles back in pre-agency/Fictionwise days, and have them transferred to BN when FW went out of business. This series reminds me a bit of my absolute most favorite Hilary Tamar series by Sarah Caudwell for the bone dry British humor (humour), a bit of Amanda Cross/Kate Fansler for the academic bent of many of them, a bit of R.B. Dominic (aka Emma Lathen)/Ben Safford on the political side, and is just overall quite enjoyable. I do mostly disagree with Edwards's politics, but mostly she doesn't shove them in your face, except possibly in the last couple of books in the series, and I found I could easily overlook the politics most of the time.

Anyway, after a long-winded post...

Corridors has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle US.

Quote:
Battered to death with a piece of abstract sculpture titled 'Reconciliation,' Whitehall departmental head Sir Nicholas Clark is claimed by his colleagues to have been a fine and respected public servant cut off in his prime. Bewildered by the labyrinthine bureaucracy of Whitehall, Scotland Yard's Superintendent Jim Milton recognizes a potential ally in Clark's young Private Secretary, Robert Amiss.

Milton soon learns from Amiss how Whitehall works: that it can be Machiavellian and potentially homicidal, that Sir Nicholas was obnoxious and widely loathed, that he had spent the weeks before his murder upsetting and antagonizing family and associates, and that his last morning on earth had been spent gleefully observing the success of his plan to embarrass his minister and his department publicly. And they still need to discover who wielded the blunt instrument.

This is the first of Ruth Dudley Edwards' witty, iconoclastic but warm-hearted satires about the British Establishment.

If you missed this before it's back to $1.99. Probably more horror than thriller, FantasticLand by Mike Bockoven.

On sale again at $1.99, although in the intervening two years, it has become the next-to-next-to-last in the series .

Blue Blooded is no longer, as of last month, the most recent in Emma Jameson's Lord and Lady Hetheridge series, but it is now on sale on its own, at $0.99/£0.99 at Kindle US/UK respectively. It's not on sale, at least as of now, at Kobo US.

Guilty Not Guilty is the latest (2019) in Felix Francis's continuation of books in the style of his father, Dick Francis (or possibly, according to some rumours, the style of his mother).

Since the elder Francis wrote a lot of non-series titles, it's hard to say the younger is continuing a series (although he did write one Sid Halley title), but in any case, the books seem pretty clearly built on the same model.

Guilty has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK. These tend not to drop either so much or so quickly in the US, so if you are in the UK, and/or can travel, you might grab it if you want it.

Quote:
***Thrillers that race from the very first page***
'Felix Francis' novels gallop along splendidly' Jilly Cooper
‘From winning post to top of the bestseller lists’ Sunday Times

It is said that everyone over a certain age can remember distinctly what they were doing when they heard that President Kennedy had been assassinated, or that Princess Diana had been killed in a Paris car crash, but I, for one, could recall all too clearly where I was standing when a policeman told me that my wife had been murdered.

Bill Russell is acting as a volunteer steward at Warwick races when he confronts his worst nightmare – the violent death of his much-loved wife. But worse is to come when he is accused of killing her and hounded mercilessly by the media. His life begins to unravel completely as he loses his job and his home. Even his best friends turn against him, believing him guilty of the heinous crime in spite of the lack of compelling evidence.

Bill sets out to clear his name but finds that proving one’s innocence is not easy – one has to find the true culprit, and Bill believes he knows who it is. But can he prove it before he becomes another victim of the murderer.

Guilty Not Guilty is a journey of greed and jealousy set against the grief of personal tragedy and loss, with many a twist and turn along the way.

The Mark (Henry Parker #1) by Jason Pinter is FREE today.

https://smile.amazon.com/Mark-Henry-...al-text&sr=1-1

Quote:
All I can think about is how much I want to live.

I moved to New York City a month ago to become the best journalist the world had ever seen. To find the greatest stories never told. And now here I am Henry Parker, twenty-four years old and weary beyond rational thought, a bullet one trigger pull from ending my life.

I can't run. Running is all Amanda and I have done for the past seventy-two hours. And I'm tired. Tired of knowing the truth and not being able to tell it.

Five minutes ago I thought I had the story all figured out.

I knew that both of these men one an FBI agent, the other an assassin wanted me dead, but for very different reasons.

If I die tonight more people will die tomorrow.

Fortunately, the grammatical errors in the blurb (see post ~3 above this) do not seem to be in the book itself. I read/skimmed the sample long enough to find that this sentence
Quote:
I knew that both of these men one an FBI agent, the other an assassin wanted me dead, but for very different reasons.
is not in the book this way. The book says
Quote:
I knew that both of these men wanted me dead, but for very different reasons.
which is much more grammatical. The fact that one is an FBI agent and one an assassin must come from elsewhere in the book.
