Best format to convert to EPUB?
I was looking at this book http://www.underground-book.net/download.php3 and wondering which format would be best to work with to create an EPUB.
It's sort of opinion however my natural reaction was LIT format. Any opinion welcome! |

What a strange selection of formats! Yes, LIT should convert well to ePub.

Thank you and karma for the link! And the html-version should convert well, too.

I wonder how we could get a decent EPUB version of this book made available?
Would we need to write to Suelette to get it made? I'm assuming of course it isn't available for sale electronically. I'm thinking to keep in line with what was originally published that it would particularly good in Open Baskerville http://klepas.org/openbaskerville/ and wonder about including the font in a EPUB. Open Baskerville is released under the Open Font License: The OFL essentially means you can share, edit, and even redistribute the font so long as you don’t sell it by itself — it may be distributed as part of a software package...
So, if the font is complete enough (seems to be in development still) there would be no problem - once you got it out of git |

There's a .zip collection there too, but it still looks like the source files rather than an opentype or truetype font which would be more handy, of course.
If you're mainly just looking for a free license Baskerville clone, there's also ADF Baskervald Std, which you can download in opentype format here. |

There is something very strange going on here. The book Underground was written by Suelette Dreyfus and Julian Assange, © 1997, 2001, and was published by Random House Australia. It is available from the link which started this thread, and is also on Project Gutenberg and as a free ePub (horribly formatted) from Many Books.
According to the Random House Australia website they will put it on sale as a print book and an ePub ebook both for $25 early in 2011. So, how could the authors put on Project Gutenberg? Is it still in the Public Domain? Can I make an ePub of it and upload it to the MR library? Regards, Alex Last edited by AlexBell; 12-24-2010 at 02:50 AM. Reason: To get the date right |

Alex,
The copy of Underground I have is specifically marked "Copyright (c) 1997, 2001 Suelette Dreyfus & Julian Assange". That copyright was never given up and the book has never been in the public domain; it was however made freely available to the public through PG and that link by the authors (with publisher approval). It happens! Now our man Julian, the great white haired hope, needs our support for himself and WikiLeaks, so he may need to sell some copies (not to mention the fact the world wants to read more about him and his friends during his youth, given the public interest as it is). This may mean he will need to sell a few copies of a (improved?) EPUB and print book in 2011. To the best of my knowledge this won't prevent the continued availability of the current texts. It might be an idea to contact PG and see about uploading an improved EPUB, and contact Suelette Dreyfus about upping to MobileRead (I'm guessing Julian would be busy). |

Thanks, April Hare.
This just shows that great minds think alike; I've found the information you quote and come to the same conclusions - even sending an email to Suelette Dreyfus' Melbourne University address. She hasn't answered yet, but I guess it's the holiday period. And I'm even thinking of paying Random House's exorbitant price for the ebook, for the same reasons you mention. Regards, Alex |
