Ok thanks Abtacha and booklover6, I didn't realise it was Calibre that was the key for the tags > collections/shelves.... in future I'll try to remember not to use Calibre to transfer my books to my Sony since all those collections from the tags create too much clutter for my taste

@booklover6 : my mother in law has a computer but I think I'll have to reinforce the "it's an e-reader, not an Ipad",

@l_macd : funny, that's actually what I like, having the books sorted by "subject" and also by "series" and by "language" depending on how I want to search. But I spend quite sometime on Calibre, setting the tags right

(maybe I'm crazy but I did the same with my paper book database ... )

Just edit the Device Interface plugin for the Sony. While the device is connected to calibre, click the dropdown under the Device Icon, and select to customize the device. You will get the popup according to the screenshot I attached. Take note of the bit in red -- clear that field, and it should no longer create collections.

I cheated to get this popup, as I don't have a Sony -- I went to Preferences ==> Advanced => Plugins. The Sony plugin is under Device Interface plugins ==> "Sony PRST1 and newer Device Interface", or "Sony Device Interface" for devices older than the PRST1. Or just search "sony" in the plugin search bar.

Not at all crazy. Efficient and organised I'd call it.

@ eschwartz - many thanks. I've done as you suggested, so will continue to use Calibre to transfer my books to my Sony
As ever, I am continually amazed by how brilliant Calibre is, even if I have to rely on you to tell me how to get it to do what I want it to do at times!

Ah, so I've kept you amongst the converted!

With calibre, there is ALWAYS a way! (And if there isn't there will be, because you asked.)

My take would be kobo or kindle, because you can use it to download book directly without the PC, it's easier.

Kobo and amazon are also the only that won't let you down when it comes to finding books in french.
