Top Margin

Hello Folks,

Being new to Kobo I have some basic questions. First I see that changing the margins does not affect the top of the page. I would like a little more white space between the bevel edge and the first line of text. Is there a way to do that?

Thanks in advance!

C.

Yes, there are a few options:
  • The Kobo patching system has several options for controlling page margins.
  • If you decide to use calibre to format-shift your standard epubs to kepub during the send-to-device process, you probably don't need to do anything because kepubs, by default, have a header containing the book title.
  • If neither of the above appeals to you then there is a calibre option which allows you to store a small CSS file in the root directory of your Kobo. This file will contain an @page statement (e.g. @page {margin-top: 20px}) and calibre will insert it into each epub during the send-to-device process. You can read about it here.

This method is a fix-once-and-forget-about-it option and requires minimal technical knowledge. If you decide to use it don't forget to configure your calibre Kobo driver (KoboTouch or KoboTouchExtended) to use it by checking the box labelled 'Modify CSS' at the bottom of the 'Collections, covers & uploads' tab.

You will need to resend any books already on the Kobo

Thanks, Jackie. Looks like I need a crash course on patching.

Well, the 3rd option is the easiest if patching is a step too far at the moment.

What firmware version are you using? If it's 4.9.11311 and it is sideloaded epubs you're reading, chances are you are seeing a bug where the top margin disappears. There is a workaround:

It will also be fixed after using the previous location button, after navigating to another page via the ToC or the navigation bar.

You shouldn't have to install patches or change CSS 😊

It's basically just reading the comment lines in the patches. (I'm no expert at it, but I've managed to change what I wanted to change.)
