Been there, done that!

It was my first and only time on a horse. The animal took off at a full gallop straight at the tree line of the woods. I told the beast to make a right turn, but it just ignored me. No matter how hard I pulled the reins to the right, it just kept on charging at those trees until it was within ten feet of them. That's when I discovered that horses had the unique ability to make a 90 degree turn at full speed. For my part I continued in the same direction as before. The critter stood there looking at me with laughter in his eyes. I got up, taught it some French, and got right back on. It was okay after that.

Annie Proulx wrote The Shipping News which won the Pulitzer Prize and was made into a movie starring Kevin Spacey and Judi Dench. A wonderful book and movie. The other movie was Brokeback Mountain based on one of her short stories.

I'm currently reading [i]Accordion Crimes right now and it's quite good so far.

I'd googled earlier to find out, and I've not read any of her stuff so wouldn't have got it. Agree that the film The Shipping News was excellent.
