There is no need to fix it, it's not broken. There is an option on the page to do a move, and that is what lets you change the header. Remember the header also acts as the page name.

@latepaul. Since I rarely use ADE for anything but Overdrive I regarded it as broken and posted accordingly. I should have been more specific. If 1.7.2 still fits your needs personally I wouldn't bother fixing what is not broken. Thanks for letting me know. If it is easy for you to post the wine errors please do so with a spoiler tag. I'm wondering if Mint has separate packages for wine gecko and mono support?

@JSWolf. Thank you for pointing out the missing ".". A simple typo but a very important one. And thanks to PeterT for correcting this.

It gets quite near the end of the setup (progress bar ~80%) and then says it has hit an error and will remove files. So the repeated lines that begin "fixme:ngen:wmain stub..." are from the removing files part. I think the last error before the setup fails is the one about the event log.

1.7.2 does work for me at the moment but I'm always aware that it might be necessary to upgrade at some point, which is why I asked for more info in case there's a case I could hit where it doesn't.

I'm not using the Mint repos for wine I'm using the Winehq PPA. I probably shouldn't be on staging as it updates all the time and is therefore a moving target. I think I installed it when I was trying to get the 3M library software working (which I used for a while but then stopped using, too fiddly and my library doesn't have enough ebooks on it). I'll probably go ahead and do that today.

There's no separate wine_mono package. When you do the wineboot it prompts whether you want to install Mono. It also does this when the version of wine updates, so I get it quite frequently (again probably shouldn't be on staging!). Similarly I recall that it installs the wine gecko when it's needed. IIRC it does that when you install ADE.

Since it doesn't work "out of the box" for me, I started to toy with the idea of setting up a Docker container with the right versions of everything. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a base image for Manjaro so I've tried Ubuntu and Alpine so far. Neither has worked - although I was using distro packages so I might try Ubuntu again. I also tried Alpine in a VM just so I could get the steps right, but I've abandoned that, I was having to make too many edits to winetricks.

Anyway if I get anywhere with it I'll let you know.

If you ever plan on using Google Books and/or Overdrive, then ADE 1.7.2 will not work for you. Do you want to be in a situation where when you need ADE to work, it doesn't and then you have to spend a lot of time trying to fix it when you need it tow work now? Would you not be better off fixing ADE now so when you need it to work, it will work?

Erm, yes. That's exactly what I said :

I finally got this working on Arch (WINE 2.1-staging, winetricks 20170207). The experience reminded me of why I hate WINE with a passion! It's 50 times easier to create a simple virtualbox Windows VM in my opinion.

Anyway, I found that on Arch, the way to successfully install the official dotnet35sp1 is by making sure that mono is NOT installed into your newly created .adewine prefix. If you've already installed Arch's wine_gecko and wine-mono packages, you don't have to remove wine-mono, wipe your prefix and start over. Just run "wine control" (in the same newly created prefix) and use it to uninstall Mono from your .adewine prefix. Gecko can stay. There's also an env var of some kind to keep WINE from installing gecko/mono into newly created prefixes in the first place (I think). Maybe next time.

After that, the wiki instructions for dot net35sp1 and ADE 2.0.1 worked with no problems. Both installations completed successfully.

HOWEVER ... ADE still wouldn't launch. OpenGL error (arghh!). Seems a dependency decision I made when installing wine in the first place was the wrong one.

Before first installing wine from the Arch repos, I had to enable the multilib repository (grumble, grumble, grumble -- hate multilib stuff). Then I had to choose from about 4 different 32-bit opengl drivers as a dependency. lib32-mesa-libgl was the wrong one for me. Once I switched to lib32-nvidia-libgl (and its three other 32-bit dependencies--grumble, grumble), ADE 2.0.1 successfully launched.

Now to see if I can get it registered to my Adobe id.

EDIT: and it worked. I registered and downloaded my latest purchase from Kobo. Now, at least, I know I have a backup plan if my VM ever dies.

On Sabayon it just works. There is no prompt about either dotnet or gecko on running wineboot. On Manjaro there is a warning on running about the absence of mono and gecko. There is an option to install them, but with a suggestion that it is better to use the packages from your distro. I declined the offer to install and did in fact install these two Manjaro packages. It then just worked with no further difficulties.

I love and use Linux. Here we have an example of what is both a strength and a weakness. So many distros and packages and configurations. Fantastic for choice, but difficult in a situation like this. I hoped the howto would provide a simple way for those running Linux without a good knowledge of it and the command line to get this package installed and working. Also to save some time and effort for more advanced users. It seems to be doing this job to some extent. I doubt it will ever work for every distro and configuration out of the box, but hopefully with some contributions we can get it working for most cases.

Wine is indeed a nightmare. Sometimes I wonder how it works at all for so many programs. And with Windows a moving target and becoming ever more bloated.

I don't currently have anything running Linux Mint. When I get a few moments I will install it in a VM and see if I can reproduce and hopefully solve the problem.

Taking a break from watching the progress bar on the dotnet35sp1 installer crawl across...

VMs are definitely easier. But for me at least, a lot slower. With my current PC I can pretty much forget trying to do anything else when I run my Windows 7 VM. Also, at the moment I'm running a liquorix kernel which improves responsiveness a lot for me. Unfortunately I didn't build it, and it was built with gcc 6.something, and when I try to run vmplayer under it - vmplayer wants to me to rebuild its kernel modules and complains it can't find the relevant gcc version. I hit the equivalent problem with Virtualbox but vmplayer gave me a better error message.

Or to put it another way, I have to reboot before running a VM.

I hadn't realised until reading DiapDealer's post but the aim is to *not* install mono. BTW "wine control" doesn't show mono as having been installed. But I tried again a couple of times and it still wouldn't play nice. I went back to using staging as that worked for DiapDealer. FWIW I found this on WineHQ Wiki:

Quote:
The Mono package should always be removed before installing native .NET. This can be done with the following command-line:
Code:
$ wine uninstaller --remove '{E45D8920-A758-4088-B6C6-31DBB276992E}'
(link)

Probably worth including this as a step in the wiki instructions, Daryl.

Current attempt - still crawling, fingers crossed! - is in a Debian-based Docker container. Really not sure why that's working and the native attempts failed. However if it works I'll take it. Otherwise probably revert to the VM.

And yes, this is definitely one of the things I love/hate about Linux. There's almost always a way to get something working, the question is, how far down the rabbit hole do you want to go? I often think things seem simpler on Windows/Mac simply because you hit a wall of nothing else to try a lot sooner. So something either works or doesn't and you move on. With Linux there's always a tantalising hope that if you re-compile with these flags, update that library etc, maybe it'll work.

And if you're the wrong kind of obsessive that can be fatal. Yesterday I was actually building an Arch VM so I could create a base image for Docker, to create a container to run Wine in, in order to install ADE 2.0.1, which I don't strictly need... all because I don't want to be "beaten". That's several layers of insanity.

If that's insane, I should have been committed long ago! That just sounds like typical Sunday morning exercise to me.

I don't need ADE running in Wine at all. Any version. I just had to make it work.

As for wine_gecko and wine-mono, I was under the impression that having those packages installed would mean that they would be copied to all new prefixes when created (to the tune of over 450Mb worth of extra stuff). It just bypasses the need to download/install them when prompted creating a new prefix

I got the idea to remove mono when I saw that the winetricks version of dotnet35sp1 was removing mono with the command you specified.

Best of luck!

@latepaul. Mono and wine are a bit of an unholy combination. On Manjaro I got the message about gecko and dotnet and installed the distro packages, yet the framework installed okay. But I agree the howto should be amended at least for mono. Not sure about gecko.

From what I can see Wine is in a funny state on Mint, Ubuntu and probably the other Ubuntu based distros. Not sure about Debian itself or distros based directly on Debian and not Ubuntu. The native packages for Wine and Winetricks are significantly outdated versions. You can settle for this or use the PPA versions of Wine. I hope to have a bit of spare time in the next day or two to install Mint in a VM and see if I can get it working. I think the howto may well need a section on these distros specifically. For the moment the old version of Winetricks probably should be installed with the package manager to see the necessary dependancies are satisfied, then the latest script downloaded and used to replace the old one in /usr/bin. Probably also need to include installing wine from the PPA. Hopefully we'll have a working procedure for Ubuntu based distros soon.

@DiapDealer @latepaul. I think we are all insane by these standards, together with many of our fellow Linux users. It is years since I used Debian and I have never bothered with Ubuntu or Mint beyond a cursory look. But I find using Windows these days incredibly annoying. It just seems to become ever more bloated and dumbed down with every new version. You want to get in, get something done quickly, and it won't start up for the next hour while it installs updates. Or your anti-virus prggram which you have paid good money for thinks its function is to continually show annoying and obtrusive popups trying to sell you the many other products from the vendors line. I am always so happy to get back to Linux.

Hi. So latest update.

I have successfully installed ADE 2.0.1 inside a debian Jessie based container (with wine-staging from the winehq PPA). It appears to run OK, however it fails to authorize the computer. I've tried changing my password to make absolutely sure it's not that. It looks as though it's a similar problem to that which DiapDealer hit. I get this output:

Code:
libGL error: failed to open drm device: No such file or directory
libGL error: failed to load driver: r600
Unlike DiapDealer, I don't have a lot of choice about which libgl to install.

Googled those errors and there's hits where updating wine fixed it. Also where using Steam and a game distributed its own, outdated libGl libraries, which is obviously not relevant here. So it would seem what I need is a libGL library that'll provide DRM capabilities. I'm not even sure it needs to drive the physical GPU as it's running inside the container and using the host's X11 display.

By the way, I have tried to get it working on the host itself but that continues to be an issue and so far I've gotten further with the container. Which is more fiddly but if I get it to work, I'll have a robust solution that's not dependent on the host OS version.

Hmm. Doing a bit more reading looks like this approach is fundamentally flawed. Since this is the equivalent of running an X program over a network connection it doesn't use the libGL's hardware capabilities, and it would seem the DRM stuff is tied to that.

I know I didn't have a lot of luck running Sigil in a container using the host's X server. I can't remember the specific errors, but lots of different menu items just didn't work/render properly.

I wonder what the effect would be of using the .adewine wineprefix (with the installed ADE) from the containier direcly on the host?

That's a good idea, since I seem to be failing to install the components on the host itself.
