Swaping "titles" versus "author"

Hi all,

I have in my portable calibre library a lot of items which the title has the name of "author" and in the author property for "title". For example, the Title column, the value appears as "Mr. Bean" and in the Author column is "In the hospital" instead of Title = "In the hospital" and Author is "Mr. Bean".

I think this caused by the automatic functionality of Calibre when dealing with the file name "Mr. Bean - In the hospital".

What can I do to massively swap (one or more of the) titles with the authors of many items so that they look better. I find in context menu but seems not available, and the import function allow to do that handle metadata seems not very flexible for that.

Kind regards

Select the books in question, press E for bulk metadata edit, ensure you are on the Basic metadata tab, check the box "Swap title and author", press OK.

Select all affected books, hit Edit Metadata (or the "E" shortcut key).

Check "Swap title and author" in the Bulk Edit Metadata window.

Edit: Ninjaed!

P.S. chaley, do not suggest merging all books into one! Check your shortcut keys.

Also you can fix the import pattern, use author first then title.

Code:
(?P<author>.+) - (?P<title>[^_]+)

Nearly ninjaded too

Maybe chaley did the same kb short changes as me - E for Edit Book, M for Edit Metadata and nothing for Merge. I use Merge so infrequently it doesn't warrant a kb short, let alone an unmodified one.

Forgive me, I should've specified "...and check your defaults".

Ooops.

My shortcut key is 'E', but I was thinking 'M'etadata when I wrote the post. I put M in the post even though I typed E in calibre to test it.

Oh, wow! Thanks to Chaley, BetterRed and Eschwartz,

Calibre has so many functionalities that I don't really know. I would dedicate some time to learn that for better using of this fantastic software. By the way, what I really want to express is a function in a context menu that allow user to just choose some items and then righ-click and choose to swap.

Once again thank you very much for help :-) Have a good day!

There is a built-in safeguard on that. If you try to merge more than 3 (I think; it's someting around that) book entries, Calibre will pop up an 'Are you sure?'.

I've run into that once or twice on a particularly messy library which turned out to have multiple entries for different formats after metadata cleanup.

Well, a shortcut key was recently added, if that helps.

Edit: "Recent", , so recent it hasn't been released yet.
Today's release was canceled because the developer is feeling under the weather.

Hi all, just a silly question regarding on the "author name", I recognize that there is an inconsistency in the authors in my collection. For example, "John Doe" and "Doe, John".

How to make them consistence in "Name Surname" or "Surname, Name"? Which
functionality allow user to do that automatically?

Thank you! :-D

Regards

Use the [GUI Plugin] Quality Check to "Check Metadata" for "authors with commas" and "invalid author sort".

You can use one of the Fix options to
swap author FN LN <--> LN, FN
when the author has a comma, and from there you can use Bulk Edit Metadata to recalculate all author_sort values, after finding the books with invalid author_sort.
