Eliot, Charles W. (editor): Harvard Classics Volume 1 V2.0 21 Mar 2014

The Harvard Classics Volume 1 (Franklin, Woolman, Penn) Published 1909

Edited by Charles W Eliot LL D. (March 20, 1834 - August 22, 1926)

The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written.

The Journal of John Woolman tells the encouraging and powerful story of John Woolman's life. John Woolman was a 17th century Quaker and abolitionist. His Journal focuses on his moral, spiritual, and intellectual development. In particular, it depicts Woolman's deep concern for equality and justice.

Some Fruits of Solitude in Reflections and Maxims is a 1682 collection of epigrams and sayings put together by the early American Quaker leader William Penn. Like Benjamin Franklin's Poor Richard's Almanack the work collected the wisdom of pre-Revolutionary USA.

Version 1.1: Changed book cover for consistency with other books in this series. (Approx 50 DLs)
Version 1.2: Added frontispiece, corrected some typos and cleaned up TOC. (11 DLs)
Version 1.3: Corrected self-inflicted errors from version 1.2. Notably the Frontispiece was missing and internal chapter links didn't work.
Version 2.0: New Book Cover. Revised Table of Contents. Various formatting issues resolved. (268 DLs)

Updated to version 1.1. The only change is to the book cover for consistency with other books in this series.

Very nice updated versions from the ones that are about 5-7 years old.

I run them through calibre to get a justifed right edge.

These look great and I look forward to getting the entire set.

Thank you for your hard work on these.

Thank you! Feedback on quality, typos, formatting, etc is always welcome. I use Word 2007 to initially format the books so subsequent changes are fairly easy.

Please, use the proper format for the thread titles, in particular:

LastName, FirstName: Title

I've added "Eliot, Charles W. (editor):" to the first 5 volumes.

Great job. I am still working on reading this volume but the others will be well received I am sure. I am adding each of this to our wiki https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Harv..._at_MobileRead as soon as they are released so that they will be easily found as a set.

Many thanks Dale! The complete series will take a while but I'm determined to get them all converted. It also gives me a chance to read them (albeit lightly) and that's a good thing.
For those who may be curious I'm using the PF Collier & Son Corporation edition(s) as my primary reference.

If you do a search for "fair footing" and then [5] (or [5] directly) you will find that this should be a footnote. It should reference a footnote that says in part "A printing-house is always called a chapel by the workmen, the origin of which appears to have been that printing was first carried on in England in an ancient chapel ...

edit: Oh' I see you just put it inline later in the text.

I have attached an image I found for this book. It is for information should you decide to use it. It was at the beginning of the book before the TOC.

I tried to position footnotes below the paragraphs that referenced them but that may not be the best way. There is at least one thread here on MR discussing their proper placement, especially considering the variety of ereaders out there, and it didn't seem to me there was any consensus on the 'best' place to put them.

Re the frontispiece, each of the volumes has one but I didn't see an easy way to extract them from the scan at archive.org so many thanks for that one!

And a question about footnotes in general: Right now they are indicated by [#]. I could change that to just the footnote number using superscript so that the reference doesn't disrupt the reading flow as much if that would be more appealing. What do you think?

A couple pages later there is a passage that says: "he bad another wife" bad should be had.

I'll put that correction in the next version and also include the image you thumbnailed above.

ETA: Found the easy (and obvious) way to extract the pictures from the scans. Thanks again, Dale.

Maybe not "easy" way, but what I do is click on "All Files: HTTPS" in the left frame, then select the largest or "orig" zip with the scans. This can be a huge file, sometimes a few GB. From that zip, you extract the page you are interested in and work with that.

That would certainly work. What I did what right click on the page I wanted, select "save image as", and go from there.
