That doesn't surprise me. When I moved from the US to Canada 13 years ago, I discovered some amazing authors I had never heard of when I lived in the states. I had actually read Alice Munro and a few others when I lived "down south" but wow, it was terrific to have a whole country's worth of lit to discover.

One heartbreaking and beautiful story (about Alzheimer's Disease) is the slim volume (about 70-odd pages), titled "Away From Her." (This was also made into a film, which I have not seen.)

The story above is apparently in the collection published by Everyman's Library, and is titled "Carried Away- A Selection of Stories," but I don't own that volume in any form. I don't know if it's available as an ebook or not.

Another volume, "Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage: Stories," is a wonderful collection of short stories.

Really, all her books that I've read are beautiful gems of literary fiction.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of her short story collections. They're currently expensive, however, and are in the price range pushing $10.00 - but worth it if you enjoy the best of contempory, literary fiction.

Also a good place to start is Lives of Girls and Women. While it is a collection of short stories, it reads like a novel.

I'll take your question seriously, since you have no smileys attached.

I enjoy reading Ellison's work, although I often find his fiction less than profound. As a genre writer, he is excellent; but as a literary writer, he only rarely rises above the ghetto of genre fiction, which is probably true of all fiction anyway.

As far as what I know about the man, my knowledge only goes as far as what I hear on the internet, in that he appears to be a real ass and has been dying for the past few years.

(Aren't we all.)

Alice Munro is a serious literary writer, and is much admired for her work. I admire her greatly, which is the reason I collect her books.
