One of the docs that I sideloaded to my Kindle was from Gutenberg (The Vicar of Bullhampton) and they put all the full screen-sized pictures at the end of the book one after another. So when you click on a text embedded thumbnail that jumps you to the full-page picture. Works great unless you TAP on the screen to go back a page which in most publishing methods would simply collapse the full page picture and take you to the page with the embedded thumbnail. But no in this book it takes you back to the preceding expanded picture. And it worse resets the furthest page read to hundreds of locations in advance from where you were. It used to be simple to just reset the furthest page read. But the new manage content/devices area does not allow you to reset a document file you have uploaded via sideloading. I could be wrong but I thought that it used to? Or did it never work with sideloaded books? Anyway it is driving me nuts as I can find absolutely no way to return the book to where going to sync to furthest page read will not take me to the end of the book. I am reading this book on three different Kindles so I really want to keep them in sync! Is this a problem for all or am I doing something wrong, missing some obvious interface command maybe? How can I reset this file so furthest page read is returned to normal? It is my Colorsoft on the latest system that needs a furthest page reset.

That sounds more like a structural issue with the one ebook rather than a system problem.

Edit the eBook to put the images where they belong instead of at the end.

If amazon hadn't crippled the back button this wouldn't be an issue.

It is not a System error but it just seems that there should be a way (and I think was a way) to with a menued command choice to reset a book's furthest page read. I checked and that such a menued command does still appear for all the ebooks that were purchased but does not for at least a wide sample of my PD sideloaded books. So I guess my question is that given how Amazon has crippled the system how could I reset the furthest page read variable in a sideloaded book?

OK, I finally figured out a fix. This is very enervating to say the least to have to do. I used the content and delivery area to delete all instances of the book from all devices and from my library. Then I redownloaded the book from Gutenberg. Went back to delivery and sent it to the three devices I wanted it on. Went to the Colorsoft and found the page I was at and set that up. Then on the other two devices I could sync again so everything is OK well for now. Up until I again hit the margin just right to skip pages ahead or forget not to use back to go to the page that sent me to the enlarged graphics. Sigh. I just cannot fathom why they apparently removed the reset furthest page read command from books that they did not sell you. I have had a Kindle since the very first one and almost every model since. Amazon is getting very, very weird. Whch does seem to fit the overall milieu these days.

I think that Kindle's software team is in a similar position. They're working on useless things like x-ray, at the same time, main reading interface has glaring issues. If you wish to open full dictionary while reading a book, you need to tap a button that opens a single window in the middle of the screen that then contains a single button that then opens dictionary. Convoluted and unnecessary. That same dictionary miraculously allows changing fonts, but as soon as you change them, it will also change fonts in the book that you're reading, and if you change fonts in the book it will reset dictionary fonts as well... Touch controlls are dated, only two touch areas to turn pages, no way to reverse forward and backwards areas for lefties... It's not a bad product, software wise, but just a tinny bit of effort would improve it considerably. Last edited by jackm8; 01-30-2025 at 09:02 PM. |
