Onyx Boox Note (2018) Boot Loop
About 4 months ago I made a post to the Onyx Boox Subreddit about my Boox Note (The 10.3" from 2018) getting stuck in a boot loop.
The only suggestion in that thread was to repost my issue to this form. Now that school is done, I've finally got some time to do that. I used my Note to take notes for school. During the summer, I don't use it very much, so it just sits powered off aside from the few times I boot it up to doodle something. At the end of last summer, I put it on the charger to get it ready for school. That's when I noticed it boot looping. It was working about a week or two ago before I found it boot looping. Today, whenever I power on the Note or plug it into power, the power LED turns blue and the Onyx logo appears. After ~30 seconds, the screen refreshes and re-displays the Onyx logo. It will continue to do this seemingly forever. I can force it to shut down by holding down the power button. But it will try to boot up again after a few seconds if it's still plugged into power. I cannot seem to fully enter recovery mode. If it's plugged into a computer (Linux) and I power it up while holding the back button, the light will turn blue, but screen won't refresh. However it doesn't appear to progress any further than that. Nothing appears on screen, but my computer is able to see it in lsusb as: ❯ lsusb … Bus 001 Device 009: ID 2207:320a Fuzhou Rockchip Electronics Company RK3288 in Mask ROM mode … adb devices and fastboot devices (with and without sudo) do not appear to recognize the tablet in any state. Back in 2021, my Note was suffering from random crashes due to a battery issue. I replaced the battery, and it had been perfectly stable, until this new problem. I like to keep my devices up to date. So the Note probably has the firmware that would have been available for it as of July 2024. Nothing on the device is currently valuable, so I would be comfortable running a full reset if I had that option. |

Update on this: I've recently found instructions to hold down the power button for ~7 seconds after the light comes on, then click the power button 5 times within two seconds to enter recovery mode on some Boox devices, but it doesn't appear to work on mine, and it continues the loop.

Sorry, I never noticed your first post.
Every brand of processor has some time of ROM (as in mask programmed read-only memory) low-level loader built into it. Without that it would be difficult to load software on a newly manufactured device. I know lots about Qualcomm processors, I've used Mediatek processors, I've flirted with Allwinner processors and I know nothing about Rockchip processors. Each of these have their own desktop software for interacting with their own processors. If something bad enough has occurred that you can't get to ADB, fastboot, recovery or factory reset then you'll have to be using this Rockchip software. What it's called and where you can find it, I have no idea. |
