Free cozy/historical on Amazon, from Accent Press:

A Death in the Highlands (A Euphemia Martins Mystery) by Caroline Dunford

Book two in the The Euphemia Martins Mysteries is set a hunting lodge in the Scottish Highlands.

After dodging criminal charges, Richard returns as head of the household at Stapleford Hall. Changing fortunes find Euphemia temporarily promoted to housekeeper for the first trip to the family's new hunting lodge in the Scottish Highlands, where she is fascinated by handsome, intelligent Rory Macleod, the new butler.
Taking on her new role, she encounters angry locals with a grudge against the Staplefords and thwarts what she believes to be an attempt on Bertram Stapleford's life.
A strange group of house guests arrive for the Glorious Twelfth, but with disastrous consequences.
Euphemia finds herself caught in the midst of bitter rivalries, and evidence pointing to different murder suspects. Will she unravel the mystery?
How much danger is she in? Is the crime political or a revenge killing?
And how will her relationships with Bertram and the handsome Rory unfold?

Free thriller from Endeavor Press: Tracked by Matt Lynn. Originally published by Random House in 1998.

Quote:
Why did they sack me?

For Harry Lamb, that is the only question that matters after suddenly losing his job at a major investment bank.

But when he investigates the circumstances surrounding his sudden dismissal, he finds it was linked to the critical research he wrote on on the telecoms and broadcasting giant Cable Media.

Why did they choose me?

For Julia Porter, that is the only question that matters after she is plucked from her job in management consultancy to work for the Serious Fraud Office.

But when she stumbles across the the largest insider dealing ring the City has even seen, she realises she is up against something far more serious than financial fraud.

Both Harry and Julia are up against the same enemy - unknown, unseen, and all-powerful.

Forced together, they find themselves alone and on the run, tracked by lethal professionals who can find them anywhere.

And in a desperate race against time, they must fight to prove their innocence - and to stay alive.

'Tracked' is a gripping high-concept thriller of technology, finance and espionage.

Slipping Into Darkness by Peter Blauner is on sale at Amazon for $1.99:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004S8ESIK/

Quote:
When a twenty-year-old murder case comes back to life, a detective must race against his failing sight to unravel the mystery

When Allison Wallis was beaten to death, Detective Francis X. Loughlin found the killer—Julian Vega, a teenager with a crush on the murdered girl. Using his natural sense of empathy, he cozied up to young Julian, convincing him to give a confession that would put him away until he was thirty-six.

Twenty years later, Julian is finally out of jail, attempting to remember how to live in a world without bars, and Detective Loughlin is still on the job, his sight fading, though his instincts are still sharp. But when Allison’s blood appears at a new crime scene, everything he thought he knew about that long-ago murder is called into question. Was it really Allison they buried? Was Julian actually the killer? And if he wasn’t, who else is in danger now?

This ebook features an illustrated biography of Peter Blauner including rare photos and never-before-seen documents from the author’s personal collection.

Free today - The Boreal Owl Murder (The Birder Murders) by Jan Dunlap

'Birding, the gentle pastime of watching birds, can at times become a competitive sport. Even at its worst, though, when birders don’t give out information of their sightings and try to sidetrack other birders, it seldom rises to the level of serious harm . . . as a rule. But when Bob White, mild mannered school counselor and dedicated weekend birder, finds a body on a birding trip, the fact that there’s an exception to every rule gets hammered home. '

'Life in modern Tokyo for transplanted California girl Rei Shimura is always a challenge, but when her Aunt Norie enrolls her in an uppity flower arranging school, life gets very complicated. The class turns into a stage for murder, and Rei must keep her aunt out of jail, decipher mysterious poetry and decide whether she can trust Takeo, the school's next headmaster. Flower people, poets, and political protesters make this a cherry blossom season she will never forget. '

Are the early books in the Rei Shimura series available as ebooks in the US? It looks like The Flower Master is the earliest one on Amazon UK. The Salaryman's Wife is the first, it seems.

I like to start at the beginning, if I can.

Free today from Amazon: Cherry Bomb (Jack Daniels #6) by J.A. Konrath, first published by Hyperion, 2009.
UK

Quote:
At the end of Fuzzy Navel, J. A. Konrath surprised readers with an agonizing cliffhanger: One of Lieutenant Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels's loved ones is dead. But who? Readers were left clamoring to know more.

Cherry Bomb, the sixth Jack Daniels mystery, opens at the funeral. While Jack stands graveside, tears in her eyes, her cell phone rings. It's the killer, escaped maniac Alex Kork, taunting Jack, drawing her ever further into a twisted game of cat and mouse. Because while Alex is more than willing to kill random victims, Jack is her true prey. But which woman wants revenge more?

The first in Linda Barnes' Carlotta Carlyle series is down to $2.99 on Amazon:

Trouble of Fools

TROUBLE…
Since being bounced from the Boston police for insubordination after six years of service, Carlotta Carlyle has set up shop as a private investigator ready to deal with anything from lost pets to substantially grander larcenies. Though Carlotta, a six-foot-tall, redheaded ex cop, part-time cabbie, and neophyte private eye, works out of her home, it’s rare that clients stop by unannounced. Especially clients like the genteel, reserved, elderly spinster Miss Margaret Devens.

ALWAYS COMES…
With cash flow problems and a caseload so light that she’s taken to reading her cat’s mail, Carlotta accepts the case of Miss Devens’s missing brother Eugene. Oddly enough, Carlotta knew Eugene when they worked together back at Green and White Cab. As far as Carlotta sees it, this case should be a pinch—until two thugs looking for money send her client to the hospital.

WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT IT…
The old lady’s missing brother seems to have been involved in something much more dangerous than simply driving a cab. Carlotta is determined to do whatever it takes?work the cops, pose as a hooker, and even drive a cab again—to find Eugene before it’s too late.

Also, today's KDD is a thriller:

Before I Go To Sleep by SJ Watson - $2.99

S. J. Watson makes his powerful debutwith this compelling, fast-paced psychological thriller, reminiscent of Shutter Island and Memento, in which an amnesiac who, following a mysterious accident, cannot remember her past or form newmemories, desperately tries to uncover the truth about who she is—and whoshe can trust.

I recommend this highly--it's got a great premise, and the author does an excellent job with it.

I'm really looking forward to this one.

************************************************** *****

I noticed today that the early part of Conrad Allen's ocean liner series has been kindle-ized...looks like the first five are $2.99 ea, I think self-pubbed. Rest of the series is from MacMillan. Haven't read any of these but seen them recommended in mystery discussions several times.

Murder on the Lusitania (Dillman and Masefield) is the first in the series.

Publishers Weekly
Allen kicks off a projected series of mysteries set on famous ocean liners with this well-crafted high society whodunit. Suave, smart and handsome, George Porter Dillman seems to be the perfect man for his job as the Cunard Line's private detective. Posing as a first-class passenger on the Lusitania's 1907 maiden voyage, he ingratiates himself with ship's surgeon Lionel Osborne, flirts mildly with young Violet Rymer, assists the troubled American Ellen Tolley, befriends the adventurous Genevieve Masefield and keeps an eye on potential card sharks and con men. Meanwhile, pushy journalist Henry Bancroft tries hard to scoop his rivals, and the aristocrats who populate the book's margins pursue their various schemes. It's not long before Dillman discovers difficult puzzles to solve. Someone has snatched the secret diagrams that explain the Lusitania's wiring, and someone--the same culprit?--has stolen a Stradivarius from world-famous violinist Itzak Weiss. When Dillman discovers Bancroft murdered by a grisly blow to the head, only he can find the real killer. Allen won't win awards for his prose ("Having been given so little in the way of evidence, he now felt that he had far too much and it was causing confusion"). He will, however, please some fans of historical drawing-room murder, especially the Anglophiles. With little violence, much description of jewelry, some intrigue and plenty of stiff upper lips, Allen's confection may overcome its predictable elements to find warm admirers.
