I find that without a case, the Libra 2 is a bit on the thin side. The case makes it a little bit easier to hold and slightly more thick. This idea of making phone and Reader thinner is ridiculous as that makes less nice to hold (IMHO).
I would love for a new Libra BW that was thicker with a more powerful battery. Thicker would be easier to hold without a case. Last edited by JSWolf; 02-05-2025 at 07:08 AM. |

For one of my old Palm PDAs, I had a hard flip-cover that attached to the top and only covered the front (well, it could flip over to cover the back when I was using it). I'd be reasonably happy to have something like that for an eReader. I've never particularly felt that the back needed any extra protection, but I've never seen a cover or case that didn't also cover the back.
And I've seen plenty of phone cases that only cover the back and sides, which seems a bit like wearing a hat that doesn't cover your head, but then I guess dropping it on the corner is the big problem with phones, and they also like to make the backs nice and slippery. |

People are different and whether they find any given device easy or hard to hold is different too. And while you can always make a device thicker and heavier with a case, you cannot make it thinner and lighter. I would find a thicker Libra very hard to hold even without a case. |

For me, the Forma has been pretty well perfect. I like the larger format (aging eyes), and because of the plastic substrate I find it easy to hold one-handed. As I have tendonitis in both wrists, weight is a major consideration for me; without a case, it's on a par with my old Kobo Touch in a case.
The weight consideration is why I've held off getting a Sage or an Elipsa; the Forma is getting a bit flaky. Several times over the past year I've transferred books from Calibre, disconnected it but left it charging, when fully charged unplugged it, and when I next wanted to use it, found the battery drained. (This happened yesterday when I had to go to the office, got the Kobo out on the train and found it dead - luckily I had my phone and could open up something in the Kindle app.) |

When it comes to cases I always get a case, especially if the device has a touch screen. This goes back to my first Palm PDA. I'd carry it in my front pocket of my uniform's shirt and it would tend to bag around as I'm walking around. Concerned about damage I purchased a case for it, and that has continued to this day. However, when it comes to cases, I prefer cases made specifically for my device rather than a generic third-party case. I just got a case for my Sony Walkman to replace the third-party case I was using and it is much better. |

It was an opinion. I don't see much of a difference between giving an opinion that people are acting foolhardy, or people are acting like they may have NPD.

Concerning PDAs and cases, the only PDA I didn't need to buy a case for was the Handspring Visor. The reason was Handspring included a plastic cover that covered the entire front of the PDA. When you needed to use the PDA, you just took the cover off and put it on the back of the PDA (it would snap into place). When I finished using my Visor I'd take the cover off the back, and put back on the front. It offered perfect protection. This is something that smartphone makers should consider, with a small additional cost it would offer far better protection for smart phones than smartphone cases. I've stopped using cases and protection things on all my electronic devices. It's just the case of weight for me.

How about thicker and lighter or thicker and the same weight? |

Oh, I haven't put my $0.02 in yet. I find this interesting because people are so different on this.
My first ereader I had a neoprene pouch with overlap and no zipper. I went to the B&N leatherette cover for the 2019 Glow. It uses a shell on the back and was altogether too bulky. My Onyx Poke3 cover had a thin plastic shell to the back and a thin front flap. Both my Onyx Poke5 and Go 6 (physically identical) came with a magnetic cover. For both I gutted the back cover and glued a stub to the back of the back case. For me, this is the optimal solution. Less weight, less magnets and it still protects the screen. I've been planning to build my own cover in the like style but have the front flap transparent. For somebody who likes showing book covers this might be interesting. But I'm not particularly fond of book covers. |
