This is the most reliable medium-term option if you don't want to jump ship to Kobo. As long as the device is registered to your Amazon account then you should be able to use the USB transfer option to download azw and azw3 (kf8) files. Downloads for my Kindle DX still works though no azw3 for that device. I picked up a refurbished Paperwhite 3 shortly after kfx happened, just in case. Once I registered it I stuck it in the back of my sock drawer where it's been ever since.

Personally, I'm not too sure the D&T option will be with us for long. I'm sure Amazon would like to get rid of it completely.

I suspect that also. However a working older Kindle also provides the option of downloading over WiFi and then copying the file from the device over USB. That is a good reason to charge the device periodically so that the battery does not go bad.

It must be a very old Kindle - pre-2012, I think. Those won't download KFX. |

That has been mentioned before and verified. Unfortunately, using a PW4 on the latest firmware (5.17.1.0.3) the ebook format seems to be KFX.

I'm sure they would. I'm also sure that implementing this change depends on how many active customers they have on legacy devices without WiFi.

Most books on Kindles in KFX can be DeDRMed and converted. The results are generally inferior to using KF8 obtained using Download & Transfer. But it is better than nothing.

There are various reasons that some customers even on more modern and current devices don't use wifi, that are nothing to do with DRM removal.

Amazon has toughened its language at the point of sale regarding buying only a license and rewrote its Kindle Store Terms of Use on December 31, 2024. So much of what's going on now in reaction to Amazon and Kindle books reminds me of a combination of head-in-the-sand and fingers-in-a-spouting-dike. |
