Prevent firmware updates on Kindle PW3

I have a used Kindle Paperwhite PW3 with firmware 5.12.4 for which I would like to block firmware updates while using wifi and amazon registration of the device. A jailbreak procedure on this forum matches this device and firmware version, and that one I believe I could follow and use.

But the subsequent procedure I found for actually blocking the firmware updates is beyond my understanding as I'm lost just with what 'ssh' means. Is there a procedure that a novice could follow? Thanks.

Update blocking has been packaged into a KUAL extension.

I followed the jailbreak procedure (linked in my original post), then used the JB hotfix bin file and Update Your Kindle. The update was sucessful. Now is there a way to verify that OTA updates are in fact disabled before I use wifi and register the device?

NB I have not done anything with the file <renameotabin> you provided as I am not sure what to do with it.

Thanks again.

I'm not aware of any kindle jailbreak procedure that automatically prevents firmware updates.

To learn about KUAL and using it, read the thread:

The "renameotabin" method involves renaming certain local programs that the current Kindle software relies on. This prevents the device from downloading the update from the server, and also causing the update process to fail (if you do manual update).

You may either do it manually, or use the packaged KUAL extension as j.p.s. told.

For more information check this:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=327879

I think it works on my Oasis 3 with 5.15.1 software.

The OTA block per jps of 'rename two files in /usr/bin/ to otaupd.bck and otav3.bck and manually kill the existing processes' looks like it requires ssh access to the kindle as I don't see these folders on the kindle using file manager. I have no idea of how to run ssh.

If renameotabin accomplishes the same block without ssh, what is the procedure for using that? Thanks.

The manual method can be done over ssh or by installing kterm, which would, among other things, give you access to the file system.

But using a KUAL extension is much easier and less trouble prone for most people.

Please read about KUAL at the link I gave.

OK I installed KUAL Booklet and the extension, found and selected 'Prevent OTA Updates' under Helper+ in the KUAL program. When I exit then restart KUAL the entry for 'Prevent OTA Updates' is not pre-checked. Is that correct and is there a way to confirm the block is working?

Wow I learned a lot from your advice. Thanks.

That version is not effective against recent firmware levels. You need specifically the renameotabinaries extension for recent firmware levels.

I don't know. I renamed by hand before the extension was available. Someone that has experience with the extension will have to help you with that.

The OP is running firmware 5.12.4

Shouldn't the extension be fine for that?

So to clarify what I described earlier, I installed KUAL Booklet and then installed renameotabin.zip, from the link you provided earlier in this thread, by unpacking the zip in the root folder. Then ran KUAL and found (and selected) from the Help Menu the option 'Prevent OTA Updates'. Not done correctly?

I didn't notice his firmware level. I don't know when things got so evil that only the renameotabinaries is effective. As far as I know the rename option is effective on all firmware levels, so I wonder if it ought to replace the other option entirely. If there is any possibility he might consider more recent firmware at some point I would recommend using the rename option even if the other is still effective at 6.12.4 level.

Dave, what is the correct procedure to install renameotabin.zip? I unpacked it in the root folder but there is no corresponding subfolder created in the extensions folder. Thanks.

I believe you need to unpack it in the extensions folder itself.
