How to prevent updates?

How can I prevent my Kindles from updating?
I use them all the time, so keeping them unregistered or off the wifi won't work.

I am currently stuck with the most current updates and I would like to be able to jailbreak it sometime in my lifetime. I hate their Kindle Collections and want to use Calibre's plugin for it.

The reason people have been warning to never to update beyond 5.10.x is because no one knows how to keep unjailbroken kindle running 5.11.x + from updating short of keeping wifi off or not registering.

Note, you still get updates even if you don't register.

I think there's some discussion about renaming certain files/executables to prevent updates. That said, disabling wifi is the most effective and foolproof method.

SKIP_UPDATE_CHECK still works for 5.11.x (KUAL Helper+ can create this).

Last I checked though, Kindle Collections + Librarian Sync is broken on 5.12 so you definitely don't want to go higher than 5.11.

Yep, all those instructions are for jailbroken devices.

For anything other than PW4, if HW/serial JB isn’t doable then it’s pretty much SOL. Doesn’t seem like there are many actively working on discovering a new JB method.

The PW3 5.9.6.1 JB was only possible because those were still being manufactured. It still used the old JB method. We were just able to get our hands on higher factory fw version.
