My main library is large and exporting it would take too much time, especially as I change things frequently. So I back up the library and configuration folders manually, using FFS to keep them updated. I've also manually transferred them to other computers several times since 2011, when I started using calibre.

Personally I find 16:10 better. Not only for calibre, but for most everything except movies.

I will research Free File Synch.

Are there any issues with doing a file-based backup while Calibre is running? I use rsnapshot to back up my Linux desktop - I'm sure that this is fine for the actual epub/pdf files, but what about the settings and database? Note that the backup DOES running in the middle of the night, so there are normally no running Calibre jobs.

Thanks!

You do not want to do a backup while calibre is running. The database could be open. It's also possible some of the files in the settings directory could be open.

You should close calibre and then run your backup.

I'm doing a backup of my calibre libraries now. When that's done, I'll do a backup of the settings directory.

I've never had any issues doing a backup of an active calibre database and library.

I've also done restores with no issues.

The last iteration of my backup system used SyncThing to propagate changes from my PC to both a QNAP Nas and an Beelink mini PC running Linux which acted as a host for calibre-web running in a Docker container. There was also automation in place using node-red to monitor changes and ensure that the calibre-web instance was refreshed to ensure it knew when the calibre database had changed.

Sort of what I thought - thanks for the confirmation :-) Fortunately the rsnapshot tool makes this easy ....
