A 460 page MMPB is 1lb2oz. So a weight 11.1oz is a lot lighter then your average pBook. And if you have a problem with an 11.1oz Reader, get an origami case and use it as a stand to alleviate the weight.
When the Oasis 3 is 6.6 oz and Paperwhite 4 is 6.4 oz, then yes, 4.5 oz adds significant weight.

The OP has already mentioned they don't like the weight of the cover. Skins/decals are a good, lighter weight alternative.

I *have* the case (for protection when carrying around outside). The weight difference is not negligible:

Oasis 1, no case: 129g
Oasis 3, no case: 188g
Oasis 1 plus case (leather): 233g
Oasis 3 plus case (fabric so I don't have to be so damn careful with it): 300g

Astonishingly, the Oasis 3 case on its own is heavier than the Oasis 1 case despite having no battery. I guess the significantly increased surface area is to blame... no wonder they didn't want a battery in there as well: it would probably be getting on for half a kilogram.

I can't read the Oasis 1 with its case for extended periods without putting it down because the weight is too great. So the same is certainly going to be true of the heavier Oasis 3 case. (However, the Oasis 3 sans case does appear to be light enough that I can read without too much pain, though I wish it was lighter. The increased weight is annoying but not devastating. The freezing cold back is a different matter. Bring on the skin!)

I wish they still made the Oasis 1. Oasis 3: no benefits that I care about, significant disadvantages. Thanks, Amazon.
The case I looked up for the weight is lighter then the one you have. And you can get a Kwimobile case for your Oasis that's less then 5oz. So if you do want a case but want less weight, you can get a case that might work for you. A Kwimobile case is 4.2oz. That's the brand case I have for my Kobo Aura H2O (6.8" screen).

Doing the math, case itself is 112g or 3.95oz which is lighter than your case. That's still the weight of, say, an iPhone 5s.

That's why I suggested an origami style case that can be used as a stand.

I might disagree with everything else you said, but this is an excellent suggestion: I had no idea they made these for recent Kindles. One is on order now! (It's just not suitable for those times when I'm reading away from tables, so it won't, ah, cover all cases, if you'll excuse the dreadful pun.)

Hilariously, Amazon recommends buying an Oasis at the same time, even though I just bought one, and they know it since I bought it from them, and it's hard to imagine anyone deciding to buy one of these cases if they hadn't already decided to buy (or already owned) the thing it goes with. As Janelle Shane has noted, our great saviour AI is actually about as smart as an earthworm, and it often shows...

I'm glad you like my suggestion. It will make it easier for you to read without hurting or hurting as much.

In the past I had to put books on my lap or on the table and be stiff sitting there. My neck and wrists could not deal with that anymore today. I could never operate paperbacks in a comfortable manner though.

OP asked about the coldness of the Oasis. I cannot put a cover on my O3 as it gets to heavy. Take a sniff of the smelling salts now JSWolf to handle that. It gets to heavy for some of us. Oh the humanity that we have different ways of reading books. Anywho. It is a wee bit cold. Thankfully for me, unlike the OP, I live in a fairly hot climate. South texas. Plus i am running a wee bit hotter these days than I used to. But, it doesn't feel super pleasant. If they made a skin covered in something like felt of fleece, that would be great. I put a love handle strap on the back. So now I can stick my fingers in it which makes it much easier to hold for me. Its just a bit big for me overall. I'd like a 6 inch Oasis with battery in. Even without a cover the O3 is almost too heavy after a while.

The shape of the device is what makes it ergonomic so a cover ruins that. I don't need no stinking cover, I would just like a more fluffy back instead of the cold dead metal.

Unfortunately... holy crap is this thing viciously cold! It's been warming at room temperature for hours and the stupid aluminium back means it's still like holding an ice cube straight out of the freezer. I am *not* raising the temperature of my house to 25C or whatever this thing demands the room temperature be to not freeze your hands off. My house is usually more like 15C, and even that is on the warm side for me.

I know people have found ways around this with lightweight stick-on backs of various sorts... so, does anyone have a recommendation of something to make this better without making the thing much heavier? 'cos this is a deal-killer for me: I'm not using it to read with if it freezes my hands the whole time I use it, nor if I've got to read it in its case the whole time.

What the hell was Amazon *thinking*? Searing cold makes the out-of-the-box experience the least ergonomic Kindle I've ever bought, and I include in this the Kindle 1. (Probably they were thinking 'everyone lives in Southern California and has room temperatures of 25C or higher'.)

59 F. is pretty darn COLD for me in a house.

And now, after my stroke, 75 F. is cold only to my damaged left side! YIKES!

15C inside would be far too cold for me too and I live in a pretty cold country. It's about 22C now in my apartment. 15C outside is fine for me.

Part of it is how you grew up, but not all of it: my sister needs 25C or higher, which is somewhere above roasting for me.

(The Skinomi skin is shown as arriving so late I'll be away over Christmas. I guess I'll try to buy it in the new year. Argh.)

I grew up in Bavaria during some fierce winters and never could get our place decent comfy. No running warm water either. Cold showers in the morning with ice on the window.

Now I live in South Texas and start shivering when I set the inside at 68F(20C) when we get a "coldfront". Here the recommendations are summer inside set at 78(26C) and winter at 68. But I want to save electricity so I turn heater off at night and just put a flannel on. Summer I can't put it much higher, way to hot here. Plus I am not of the age were I run hotter than I used to. I used to be miserable back in the day in Germany. I don't think my kindles would have worked well there. Our house was drafty, old and just cold. Unless you hunkered down right in front of the wood stove.

For further reference: covering the back and side in sellotape works. You *really* don't need a thick layer. (Of course, this looks disgusting, about as far from a 'premium' look as could be imagined, so I'm going to replace it with a proper skin in a month or so when it turns up.)

I had to Google to find out exactly what Sellotape was. Apparently a UK brand of transparent cellophane tape. Must be the equivalent of the US Scotch tape franchise.

I personally would make a cover from a thin piece of polystyrene or stick a strip of balsa wood at the back.
