What is with the Scientologist advert on MobileRead?
Sometimes I read the forums without logging in. I see adds for iRex, Cybook, and other products to buy...
I also get an occasional advert for Scientology: get the Facts!.....So what is up with that? I figure this sight stays away from most Political/Religious/Meditative.... stances.. Maybe I am wrong.. hidari. P.S. Is one of the Gurus of MobileRead a Chistian Scientologist? |

It's not our fault, Hidari.
We agree to have Google ads, so as to pay for the forum costs. They choose which advertisements to post. Actually, some of them would not be our choice at all. In the past I've seen one advertising foreign women available for marriage, any number for ebook sites and gadgets, some for programs that we aren't terribly enthusiastic about, and the Scientology one that you mention. Clearly, Google Ads has profiled this site as being full of geeky single men. |

Thanks for raising it, Hidari.
This is a good place to mention to everybody that MR does not actually endorse any of the products or services that are advertised. In my opinion there are some excellent things, plus some that are debatably useful. So, if you decide to click on an advert, then use your common sense to evaluate whether the product or service is really what you want. You could usefully search this site (and the web) for product reviews before making purchasing decisions. |

Even when you log in there are ads. Even the moderators see ads. There is an ad for "Free Remote PC Access" just above this box I am typing in to now.

Keep in mind, Google doesn't actually go to each site and "decide" which ads it will get. The very same search engines that power Google itself search through the MR site, in an attempt to determine which ads will be the most effective. I'd guess Scientology might be linked to things like "science fiction," which has come up once or twice... not to mention L. Ron's connection through SF books.
I also see ads for cell phone accessories (there's one on my page right now), which would not seem to have a close connection to the site... until you see the mentions of the iPhone, and people reading e-books on PDAs (guilty) and such. So, there's no reason to bug Google about the ads we see. As was said once by, I believe it was Dr. Richard Daystrom: "It's not my doing, Kirk." |

I think ads get placed based on key words in the thread. Maybe someone slammed "Battlefield Earth" and it sent the ad based on that. (We know it wasn't for good reviews of "BE" because there aren't any...)
For a while there, I always seemed to have Hilary Clinton smiling at me from the ads. Now it's usually for e-books and cell phones. |

DixieGal is correct. If you open the avatar for Zelda Pinwheel thread then there's a 'make your own avatar' advert.
