Thank you for posting these. I have found some of them to be quite good little histories. While others weren't worth the electrons used for them.

The Sign of Jonas by Thomas Merton, his account of his first six years in a Trappist monastery, has dropped to $1.99 (regularly $9.99) at Kindle and Kobo.

Cross-posted in Christian, then I realized it might be a better fit here.

I finished this one a couple of weeks ago and it is a very interesting read. Not so good as The Life of the Cosmos, but very good nonetheless.

Brunelleschi's Dome: How a Renaissance Genius Reinvented Architecture by Ross King has dropped to 2.99 at Kindle US. I read and loved this book many years ago in DTB, although since I'm an engineer, and there's a lot of engineering underlying the architecture, that might have impacted my view of the book a bit. (If you're not technical, don't be scared off - one of my non-technical friends also read and loved it -- just different parts of it.) But still, IMO, great book...

Spoiler:
Quote:
On August 19, 1418, a competition concerning Florence's magnificent new cathedral, Santa Maria del Fiore--already under construction for more than a century--was announced: "Whoever desires to make any model or design for the vaulting of the main Dome....shall do so before the end of the month of September." The proposed dome was regarded far and wide as all but impossible to build: not only would it be enormous, but its original and sacrosanct design shunned the flying buttresses that supported cathedrals all over Europe. The dome would literally need to be erected over thin air.

Of the many plans submitted, one stood out--a daring and unorthodox solution to vaulting what is still the largest dome (143 feet in diameter) in the world. It was offered not by a master mason or carpenter, but by a goldsmith and clockmaker named Filippo Brunelleschi, who would dedicate the next twenty-eight years to solving the puzzles of the dome's construction. In the process, he did nothing less than reinvent the field of architecture.

Brunelleschi's Dome is the story of how a Renaissance genius bent men, materials, and the very forces of nature to build an architectural wonder we continue to marvel at today. Denounced at first as a madman, Brunelleschi was celebrated at the end as a genius. He engineered the perfect placement of brick and stone, built ingenious hoists and cranes to carry an estimated 70 million pounds hundreds of feet into the air, and designed the workers' platforms and routines so carefully that only one man died during the decades of construction--all the while defying those who said the dome would surely collapse and his own personal obstacles that at times threatened to overwhelm him.

Even today, in an age of soaring skyscrapers, the cathedral dome of Santa Maria del Fiore retains a rare power to astonish. Ross King brings its creation to life in a fifteenth-century chronicle with twenty-first-century resonance.

I will second that notion, Sufue: Brunelleschi's Dome is a great book for anyone interested in history, architecture, and/or art.

I don't know how long this price has been in effect or how long it will last, but Ma’am Darling: 99 Glimpses of Princess Margaret is only £1.99 at Amazon UK. This was a book of the year for all the major papers last year and it looks tons of fun; social commentary disguised as gossip. Honestly, I can't wait!

Now:The Physics of Time by Richard Muller is available from Amazon and Kobo for $2.99.

Synopsis

From the celebrated author of the best-selling Physics for Future Presidents comes “a provocative, strongly argued book on the fundamental nature of time” (Lee Smolin).
You are reading the word "now" right now. But what does that mean? "Now" has bedeviled philosophers, priests, and modern-day physicists from Augustine to Einstein and beyond. In Now, eminent physicist Richard A. Muller takes up the challenge. He begins with remarkably clear explanations of relativity, entropy, entanglement, the Big Bang, and more, setting the stage for his own revolutionary theory of time, one that makes testable predictions. Muller’s monumental work will spark major debate about the most fundamental assumptions of our universe, and may crack one of physics’ longest-standing enigmas.
