Just to add, debug is saying I'm running 32 bit windows but I'm on a 64 bit system?
calibre Debug log calibre 1.7 isfrozen: True is64bit: False Windows-7-6.1.7601-SP1 Windows ('32bit', 'WindowsPE') ('Windows', '7', '6.1.7601') Python 2.7.5 Windows: ('7', '6.1.7601', 'SP1', 'Multiprocessor Free') Starting up... Started up in 40.24 seconds with 30976 books |

If you run the 32bit version of calibre it will always report windows as being 32 bits. That's an idiosyncracy of the way the python platform module works in windows.

I'm curious to know what the performance is of a new install of calibre Portable on this machine (and of course a smaller library associated with it).

Calibre Portable runs really slowly when placed on my data drive and normally when I put it on my OS drive. The answer is obviously to move my library to another drive, but I'm still baffled that everything else works normally pulling data from the data drive.
Thanks again to everyone who took the time to help me trouble shoot this. |

I wonder if there is some weirdness with the security access rights on the data drive; logging enabled or some such.
Also have you ever tried a defrag tool on the data drive? Maybe some of the O/S maintained data is badly fragmented? |

@polly - is your data drive encrypted and/or compressed - I did some tests on compressed and encrypted folders and suffered no undue delays, my backup drive is compressed and calibre is OK running against libraries on it. But what I haven't tried is having the library on an encrypted drive.
