TeleRead founder David Rothman has an excellent article on the Huffington Post: How e-Books Could Smarten Up Kids and Stretch Library Dollars: A National Plan presents some great reasons for initiating a national effort to standardize e-books and introduce them to kids and libraries, with significant government support.

Today millions of children are still growing up in bookless homes. But suppose a well-stocked national digital library system existed for Americans of different ages, along with the means to encourage schoolchildren and others to use it.

David indicates that he believes the technology is finally here, in the form of a standardized formatting (ePub) and various types of hardware equipped to read ePub files, to get the program started.

His fellow TeleRead editor, Paul Biba, believes this article is important enough to recommend everyone send a copy to their Senators and Representatives.
