Next month, Apple will be dusting off those digital cuffs for books, according to sources in the publishing industry.

No doubt some publishers, including O'Reilly Media -- which has vociferously argued that digital locks are harmful to sales -- will opt not to deploy FairPlay. (O'Reilly, which puts out technical books, was not on the list of five publishers during Apple's announcement of the iPad, but is discussing a deal with Apple.)

But the majority of publishers are expected to embrace FairPlay, along with other copy protection software such as Adobe's Content Server 4, as a means to squelch incipient book piracy as the e-book market begins to take off.
The question is, will Apple allow publishers a choice of DRM/no DRM?

The question really is, do we need yet another incompatible form of DRM?

At least FairPlay is easily liberated....

Actually, Fairplay was never phased out: While Apple stopped using it on music, it's still in use on videos.

I really hope they will let the publishers decide if they want to use DRM or not, like they did with EMI music!

Not a surprise, but I still hate to hear it. I would actually thought of buying if they were without DRM. As it stands, I have never bought a song from Apple, and I guess I'll never buy a book....

I know they don't now, but I buy my mp3's from Amazon... excellent selection and prices, and DRM free before Apple...

Just a left over grudge form Apples weird format and DRM in the early days....
