Frontlit E-Ink Triton

E-ink comes up with a new frontlit Trition display at the IFA Berlin. You can see it at this video at 10:40

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=ajqiG_4tLcc

Nate from The Digital Reader mentioned that no one is producing it yet. For me it looks like a realy nice improvement off the former dull, grey and washed-out color triton display without backlit. So I think after the big disappointment by the old Triton screen this is realy good news.

How do you like it and what do you think?

well, is it frontlit or backlit, dude? Decide it.

From the lighting in the borders, I'd say "border"lit.

So, it is lit. But colors are still washed out.

BTW, touch, now light. It seems batteries will be drained hard.

I also wonder how those guys who can't take LCD backlight into their eyes feel...

An eInk display can't be backlit for the simple reason that it's opaque - light can't shine through it, as it can an LCD display.

Edge lit, and front lit are essentially the same, since while it is positioned on the edge of the display panel, it is above the visible layers, and so falls into the front lit category.

Is there a way to make the film translucent so light can come through?

No. The nature of eInk makes that impossible:

See, eInk basically consists of tiny transparent capsules filled with black and white pigments. By pulling different qualities of either to the top of the capsule various shades of gray are produced. This would not work if it were translucent, since then you would just see all the pigment at once.

See that layer that says clear fluid? Why not make that the light source? And the white pigment capsules transparent.

OH DARN, I just gave away my idea without patenting it first! Let's keep it our secret, okay?

There is no clear fluid "layer". Each pixel consists of a capsule of black AND white pigment suspended in clear fluid. Making the white pigment transparent would just make the black pigment visible.

That image is very nifty. I never really looked into the how of eInk.

The more you know...

Wouldn't work. That layer is in between the pigments. the visible pigment would block the light. If you made the white capsules clear then the black would be always visible. You'd have to have the light on in order to see any variation in contrast, and it would still be like printing black on charcoal.
