Turgenev, Ivan: The Diary of a Superfluous Man and Other Stories. v1 4 Nov 2017

Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (1818-1883) has been described as the first Russian writer known to the Western world, and the only one with a European outlook and sympathies. He was very much in favour of the emancipation of the serfs in Russia, and went into voluntary exile in 1862.

Constance Garnett (1861-1946) was an English translator whose translations of 70 nineteenth century Russian classics introduced them to the English speaking public. Her work has been both praised and criticised.

This collection contains five stories (The Diary of a Superfluous Man, 1850, A Tour in the Forest, 1857; Yakov Pasinkov, 1855, Andrei Kolosov, 1844, and A Correspondence, 1856) dealing with betrayal, death, grief, loss, and unrequited love.

The text was taken from the University of Adelaide ebook library, and checked against the 1899 Macmillans & Co. edition in the Internet Archive. I have silently corrected typos, curled quotes, replaced italics, diacritics, and scene breaks, and made changes to spelling, punctuation, and hyphenation using www.oxforddictionaries.com.
