Calibre creates new icon in taskbar when launched
I'll try my best to explain the situation.
Calibre is creating a new icon when I click on the pinned icon in the taskbar and I have to use this new one to minimize etc. Is it possible for this new icon not to show and I can minimize using my original pinned icon? It's taking up extra space on the taskbar. |

I've got the same problem as @Kraftwerk, and I've tried @BetterRed's solution, which isn't working for me, unfortunately. I've made sure the taskbar icon is pointing directly to the application file, not a shortcut, but no good.
Don't know if it's relevant but the problem started after I'd re-installed Windows10 and Calibre (4.22). I'd previously backed up Calibre's configuration settings from my user profile and (after reinstallation) copied them over the new configuration settings (not sure how else I should have backed up and restored these). I've tried installing 4.23 on top of 4.22, but that hasn't solved the double icon on the taskbar problem. |

Yes, I unpinned Calibre from the taskbar before starting it, I made sure I started it from the programme itself (not a shortcut) and I pinned the running programme icon. It's a technique that's worked on other programmes so I'm a bit baffled why it's not working here too.

@BetterRed - Thanks for the suggestion. I could create the shortcut, but it did not appear in my taskbar (is it relevant that IE is not my default browser?). I'm still wondering whether over-writing my Appdata configuration settings on re-installation has anything to do with it? I mean, I can start from scratch and recreate them all, but I seriously don't want to.

That taskbar shortcuts are kept in %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar\ is a legacy from Windows 95 or maybe earlier. Fact is, they never had anything to do with IE (they're a Windows/File Explorer artefact), and the Quick Lunch feature more-or-less disappeared in Win 7. Ideally the taskbar shortcuts (that's all they are) should be in a directory at %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Taskbar - alongside SendTo and Startup directories - which are also collections of Windows shortcuts. History of the Microsoft Windows Taskbar - YouTube I just remembered - there's a 'proper' way to do this, viz: So called experts often forget the bleedin' obvious BR Last edited by BetterRed; 12-08-2020 at 05:11 PM. |

Too true.
When I was wage slave I would often ask "I know it is obvious but what about XXXX". It was amazing how many times "XXXX" had been forgotten. On occasions when it had not been forgotten, I was told sarcastically "Of Course. It is goes without saying" |

Thanks to everyone for suggestions. In the end, I deleted Calibre and all my appdata personalisations (made a notepad file of all of them, plus screenshots, so come All the Apocalypses I can recreate ad infinitum). Reinstalled Calibre 4.22 & there is - thanks goodness - only one icon in the taskbar. It's seriously a first world problem (OMG I have TWO icons), but I'm feeling curiously soothed now it's working properly.
