Nathanael says hello
A few days ago I broke my Hanvon 510. Slipped it in my hip pocket 'cause I needed my hand for something; stupid 5" reader was so small I forgot it was there and sat on it.
Anyhow, I'm on the prowl for a new reader and stumbled across mobileread.com. Really can't decide what to get. My primary constraint is that it's hard to find most of the better stuff here in Shanghai. Sonys and Hanvons are everywhere, but Nooks, Cybooks, and some of the other interesting stuff is scarce to non-existent. I've had mixed luck shipping things here - often enough they just disappear enroute. Kindles are starting to appear, but DRM-tethering, Amazon's closed ecosystem and especially the Kindle's lack of open format (read: epub) support are deal-breakers for me. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. And if anyone's had any luck shipping to Shanghai, I'd love to hear about it. --Nathanael |

Welcome Nathanael. Sorry, I don't have much advice for you, other than I love my Sony reader. I was put off the Kindle for the same reasons you were.

Good to have your company, Nathanael. What's wrong with Sony? The hardware's sound and you don't need to use their wonky store if you download the free Calibre library software. Best wishes. Neil

Hi Nathanael and welcome to MobileRead. I've had a Sony 505 for over two and a half years and like it a lot.

As for the current Sonys, the hue and cry over the 600's screen has given me pause, while the 900's too large for my needs. Perhaps the 300, if I'm willing to forgo the touch screen. Best would be if I can find anyone who still has stock on the 505. And yes, I do use Calibre. Nathanael |
