CARE DRM, Removal

Hello Calibre forum,

as many libraries change from Adobe DRM to CARE DRM: Is there any Calibre plugin for CARE DRM removal or if not: Is there a chance to have some within the next months?

Regards

You must be joking! Are you seriously asking for help to piratelibrary books???

ETA Ok, I jumped to conclusions. Sorry. But you can keep a book for three weeks, why would you want to remove the DRM?

To talk about is actually not illegal. What are you afraid of?

MobileRead's official position is that we have no objection to converting library files for personal use, assuming the user needs to make the files compatible with certain devices, and in the assurance that the books are read in a timely manner and not shared.

That said, members should be aware that this position is not shared by the Calibre developers nor the developers of the de-DRM tools, or some members for that matter, so help might be in short supply. Members also need to be very careful about how they couch requests and intentions, to make sure they don't cross the line. Anything that smacks of commercial piracy or copyright violation will not be tolerated.

Is Care DRM used for anything other then library books?

The thing is, Care DRM is worthless because there are so few devices/programs that work with it. My Kobo will not handle Care DRM. If I was stuck with a library using a service that used Care DRM, I would want to be able to remove the DRM to be able to read the eBooks.

It is used in Germany. We can choose if we like to lend a book for 2, 4, 7, 14 or 21 days. We can give it back early or it just expires. Why would anyone need to remove the drm when they can keep a book for three weeks?

Kobos aren't sold here anymore, so it is of no consequence if they can't read the new DRM. They want to sell their Tolinos and Tolino can do it. The libraries talked to Tolino first and then later to Pocketbook. They claim there is no need for them to cater to manufacturers that don't sell in Germany anymore, like Sony or Kobo. But considering how many of those Kobos still work I guess Kobo should make the CARE DRM accessible for their devices.

Ah, thanks, Issybird, I didn't know the official position differs from Calibre.

Only if someone writes such a plugin, and in this case, makes it available via their own distribution channel. Optional plugins are generally written by people who have the need for them.

But with the Adobe Adept DRM, you can do the same thing you can with Care DRM.

Yes, you can but they switched to CARE regardless. At the moment they run both systems and it is rumored they count how many people/devices still use Adobe, to see if they should go on running both systems bat the same time.

Tolinos, Pocketbooks and Android readers and tablets have no problem with the new drm anyway. There is an app, too, one can use and CARE can be used with a browser, IIRC.

Anyway, this is a European problem and won't affect you personally. Jon. Your beloved Kobo works with Overdrive, right?

True it doesn't bother me. But if this new DRM gets used in Germany, what's to stop it from being used in other countries in place of Adobe Adept DRM? It has to start someplace.

Totally possible. AFAIK CARE is open source.* It is better than Adobe in many ways. Adobe does not work with Mac and Linux for example. But I guess CARE won't replace Overdrive. We have a teensy tiny Overdrive section at the Berlin online library and it is running so smooth! It puts the rest of the Onleihe procedures to shame.

* It is based on Readium LCP, which is open source.

Two simple answers:
1) One use case is not to manage library accesses frequently but to lend a couple of books that could be readable even after a longer periode than a few weeks.
2) And yes, of course: EPUBs without DRM can be shared to other users.

In germany many libraries seem to change now to CARE DRM completely without a fallback option like Adobe DRM.
All Tolino readers get a software update to be able to manage CARE DRM EPUBs directly, with the exception of the Tolino Shine (1. Edition). That piece
of hardware starts to get unusable.
OK, from my point of view it is no reason to remove the CARE DRM for such devices but other users maybe will be lucky to use their devices for the next time and do not need to trash it.

Anyway - Calibre is (from my point of view) a good argument due to the available DeDRM plugin. Without DrDRM this tool falls back beeing only a document management software (what is the basic tool intention, but not the main feature for me).

Did you not read my post above, or did you decide you could ignore it?

Post again about misusing de-DRM tools and Calibre to circumvent library restrictions regarding sharing books or time limits and you will be banned. This is your only warning.

You mean "share" with people who can not afford 6€* per year?

*ThueBibNet charges 6€ per year. The Berlin libraries (all of them!) Are free for all on social security. And those not living in Berlin can join the Onleihe for 10€ per year, online registration, too.

Looks like I wasn't jumping to conclusions after all...
