Viewsonic MM devices to read ebooks, too

ViewSonic is promoting multi-media devices at CES 2010, and this shot of their touch-enabled VPD550T clearly suggests it will read ebooks. Due to be out in Q1, it is projected to cost $200, and have 1080P HD quality output (albeit on an external screen... the device's screen is 800x480 LCD touchscreen), but no wireless connectivity is mentioned.

Also not yet mentioned is what OS it will run, or which ebook formats it can handle... so a lot is up in the air. But at a price of $200... I'd say, worth a look. (Hey, Nate, swing on over there and give 'em a good grilling! )

I'm already at the airport, sorry. I couldn't get tomorrow off so I had to leave today.

But this is on my list of things to look in to.

Viewsonic also have an EInk Reader, the VEB612, which looks like a Netronix device.

One shoe that has not dropped yet in the ebook readers everywhere front is adding them as options to other "single use devices" with good screens. These should be easily able to support mobile Adobe Digital Editions. However the existing Viewsonic VPD400/VPD500 manual says:
Quote:
The player only support TXT version of "ANSI" encoding. Other text file encoding must be converted to "ANSI" format.
The reader software otherwise looks relatively complete.

Very shiny!

At that pricepoint you could safely assume it's a non-microsoft OS, so it's probably running Android or some other linux variant. It seems obscenely cheap, maybe it's more of a wifi interface device (sit at home and use media on your local network) rather than a mobile reader with lots of space? Will be interesting to see, but I love the look of the hardware.

That's almost as good as epub. I'm sure it's easy enough to convert with Calibre or some similar software.
