Don't forget Pournelle and Niven's Lucifer's Hammer. Pretty close to home about a comet hitting the earth. And it was nominated for a Hugo for Best Novel in 1978.

Good choice. I'd second/third the recommendations for Banks and Alastair Reynolds.
I started with Player of Games, myself, and it's still one of my favourites, but Consider Phlebas was the first written, and it mostly makes sense to read them in order. |
