Man, having a solar-powered e-reader would be neat! Looks as if this company is further along than the other that just showed a solar cell attached to an e-reader...

Here's hoping development keeps moving right along. Just thinking about being able to recharge a reader without electrical current = cool (no more fears of power outages).

Thanks for the article - very interesting to see how things are developing in the e-reader world.

I had heard something about this a few months back. The idea makes so much sense for basic ereaders, it would be a shame if it was never implemented. Unfortunately, with the market increasingly moving towards devices like the Nook and Kindle, which while wonderful, use a lot more power, it seems unlikely that this device will gain traction before people decide that just a basic ebook reader is not enough -- even if the user never needs to worry about charging the device.

If one comes out I will definitely buy one....well unless they are stuck in one-corner-button land like the Gen3 and Kobo.

The question is How long do I have to stand over an expensive ereader while it charges in the sun?

Do I set it down outside and hope it'll still be there 4 hours later?

Do you leave it under a lamp at home until it's charged?

I backpacked along a short stretch of the Appalachian Trail and read only a very little (paper back then). My vacations were only a week at a time, and most readers should be able to handle that.

So other than a long time in the woods I don't see much use for a built-in solar charger.

If the solar cell puts out enough in normal room lighting to run the reader and give it a bit of a charge, they just might have something.

I hope they don't have the famous e-ink screen fading problem. A solar powered device that faded in the sun would be a special fail.

Do they have a hydro powered one for the UK? I can't see this version selling in Manchester.
