The "WHAT EBOOKS DID YOU BUY THIS WEEK" Thread

So many bargains, so many ebooks....money comes and money goes. I thought it would be interesting, as a community, for us to share what we bought this week.

Post your list and update whenever you feel the need. Add commentary if you wish.

Fictionwise was having a 20% off coupon for Mother's Day, but inappropriately tagged it only for Romances, which it was NOT!

For my purchases this week, I bought these literary gems:

1.) The Cardboard Universe - Christopher Miller. This is a literary novel that involves a Philip K. Dick kind-of-writer. It's supposed to be hilarious. But remember: It's a literary novel.

2.) Palimpsest - Catherynne Valente. This is a Fantasy novel in the highest tradition of literary fiction. She's supposed to be an excellent writer. I'm looking forward to reading this.

3.) Harlot's Ghost - Norman Mailer. I enjoy some of Mailer's work. In his best writing (and when not being misogynistic), he's very good. This was probably his last and greatest novel, published about 10 years before his recent death.

4.) Soul Mountain - Gao Xingjian. A Nobel Prize novelist. This is about the author's spritual journey.

5.) The Vivisector - Patrick White. Another Nobel Prize novelist in Literature. This cranky old author is not for everyone. But I've read his work and enjoy it. His language is very challenging. Read some pages of anything by him before committing your money.

That's my list. WHERE'S YOUR LIST, HUH?!

Don

P.S.: I'm still the same lover of gore, but that's because I like politics! Get the play on words?! I slay myself sometimes!

Hmmm.....

I already purchased Palimpsest and started it - intriguing - but the multiple story lines failed to hold my attention - I've put it on my list to try again. I usually read 3-4 books simultaneously - perhaps this made me lose sight of the plot line. Very well written though.

This week I've bought:

1. Casino Royale - saw a post somewhere mentioning Ian Fleming ebooks - it was fun to compare to the latest movie version. Classic tough guy fast read.

2. Endurance - the story of Ernest Shakleton's disaster - the writing was great but unfortunately the Kindle version was Topaz - yecchh!

3. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies - OK, I read the postings here and couldn't resist - cute, but the jokes tend to drag on -- well, there really is only 1 joke, the zombies. But reading it did make my M.S. in English Lit sizzle at the edges.

4. Last Log of the Titanic - impulse click buy - actually pretty good - was watching a Discovery channel show on new theories of the wreck.

5. Can You Forgive Her? - I'm a life-long Trollope fan.

Poohbear, let me know what you think of "Endurance." Besides the crappy format, obviously

I read the "Endurance" by Alfred Lansing - very well written - factual & accurate AFAIK (I've read a bit of polar exploration texts) - keeps your interest. I highly recommend it.

There's another "Endurance" by Caroline Alexander - haven't read it yet - it's pricier - has lots of pictures - am waiting for my DX before buying it.

Sorry, haven't bought anything in a month or so. Hardly ever spend cash on ebooks, unless it is to "donate" to indie or MR authors. Mostly, I find that the more experience I have in finding things, the more of them are free.

My two most recent acquisitions have been A Fire Upon the Deep and A Deepness in the Sky. I am a slow slow slow reader (but fast talker) so they will last me for a month or two.

I just bought "The Lies of Locke Lamora" by Scott Lynch, because I buy anything George R.R. Martin recommends. Haven't gotten a dud yet.

The last eBook purchase I made was Star Trek: Vanguard: Open Secrets. I am in the middle of reading it. Very good.

I just got a new device, and Fictionwise is enticing me with micro savings, so I bought:

1. The Lord of the Rings (again ). I've read it before but now that it's coming to a small screen near me, and I couldn't resist.

2. On Basilisk Station, recommended by GRRM--I like his recommendations too.

And 3. I'll be getting The Science of Fear: Why We Fear the Things We Shouldn't--and Put Ourselves in Greater Danger after I get some more money on Thursday.

If you are interested in this last voyage, I've just started "South" - written by Shakleton himself - available in PD version - so far (I've read the first 3 chapters) very well written and reasonably formatted for a PD book (I got it free from Amazon).

My 2 purchases this week at Fictionwise were:

1. The Dark Priory (The Chronicles of Grimm Dragonblaster Book 6) by Alastair Archibald

2. The Chieftain (Teknarian Histories Book 1) by John Norman.

I enjoyed the first 5 books in the Dragonblaster series and have been waiting for Fictionwise to offer book 6. Book 7, the final book, is not yet available.

I'm not familiar with John Norman's writing but this series looked interesting so I decided to give it a try.

I just bought a paper book collecting blog entries...
It's sort of the inverse than the e-version of a book previously printed, isn't it?

It's a parody of the life in a big lawyer's firm, written by a young journalist in my hometown (and, yes, even with names changed, I can still recognize some of the characters and all the locations....)

Talking about ebooks, I'm thinking about the last Lee Child, but the price is still too high.
I'd also like to go for some good SF, but I haven't chosen a title, yet...
So, maybe next week....

For Mother's Day I bought:

Cat Playing Cupid by Shirley Rousseau Murphy
Murder Under a Mystic Moon by Yasmine Galenorn.

I really want to try the Mary Stanton "Angels" series (she's also Claudia Bishop, and I LOVE her), but spent too much this week already.
