Free Book (nook, Kindle) - Billy Boyle

Billy Boyle ($7.51 Kindle), by James R. Benn, the first in the Billy Boyle World War II Mystery series, is free from Barnes and Noble tonight.

Book Description
What’s a twenty-two-year-old Irish American cop who’s never been out of Massachusetts before doing at Beardsley Hall, an English country house, having lunch with King Haakon of Norway? Billy Boyle himself wonders. Back home in Southie, he’d barely made detective when war was declared. Unwilling to fight—and perhaps die—for England, he was relieved when his mother wangled a job for him on the staff of a general married to her distant cousin. But the general turns out to be Dwight D. Eisenhower, whose headquarters are in London, which is undergoing the Blitz. And Uncle Ike wants Billy to be his personal investigator.

Billy is dispatched to the seat of the Norwegian government in exile. Operation Jupiter, the impending invasion of Norway, is being planned, but it is feared that there is a German spy amongst the Norwegians.

Billy doubts his own abilities, with good reason. A theft and two murders test his investigative powers, but Billy proves to be a better detective than he or anyone else expected.

That's got to be incredibly short-sighted.

Is there a rationale for this?

Now also available free in Canada via Amazon, as noted above.

For those who read and liked it, The First Wave, #2 in the series, is a mere $3.62 at both Amazon and B&N. The rest of them are $9 and up.

Edit: Kindle users comfortable and adept with the necessary conversion process may prefer to get the B&N ePub versions (1st book still free at B&N). It turns out both titles are in the dreaded Topaz format.

It's mixing up 19th century and 21st century business principles. And it also depends on what you mean by 'only do business in the USA'. I have ordered books from B&N from the Netherlands and they were duly delivered at my home. Also geography doesn't mean much with the internet, especially with virtual goods like ebooks. And 'in the USA' also does not mean much in the virtual world. You can as well be virtually in the USA while being physically elsewhere.

You can buy paper books internationally from B&N because the publication rights are based on the point of sale. However eBook publication rights are based on the point of delivery. I believe that B&N base this on the billing address of your credit card and will not sell ebooks outside the US (actually I think they include Canada which I think is in the same publication region).

It is ridiculous and they really need to sort it out but there you go.

Maybe it would be possible not to deliver it to you but to some kind of delivery point in the USA, and let you 'come to the USA' and pick it up yourself. Similar to those companies that offer that kind of service for physical goods. For virtual goods it could be virtually free.

I finished this book last night. Looks like this is going to be another one of the those very expensive "free" books. Five more in the series...

The other way they detect it is from the point of origin of your IP address. There are ways around it with VPN software and such but it really ends up being too much of a bother IMO.

For me the VPN route is just one mouseclick.

I guess I'm just a bit lazy it's the setting it up that I've not gotten around to, and to be fair it is generally becoming less necessary (in the UK at least) as we are getting a pretty good range of ebooks available over here now.

I enjoyed the first book so I bought the second one. Have not had a chance to read it yet but the book is lend-able for the Nook. So if you have a Nook and want to read "The First Wave" send me a PM.
