My one dislike about ereaders

I have been reading exclusively on my Sony PRS-505 and PRS-500 before that. I love them and haven't read a paper book in years now. I also read a lot more now than I did before my first ereader.

The only thing I find difficult with ereaders is searching. Many times I'll be in the middle of a book and they will mention a character that was briefly introduced 100 pages earlier and I had forgotten him/her. With a paper book it is easy to skim back through, recognizing appropriate parts of the story, and find that character introduction. I find that hard to do electronically. A couple of times I have resorted to creating a paper log of when characters were introduced. How do others handle this, or is it even a problem for anybody else?

The Kindles allow searching. That's the one feature I miss on the Sony hardware.

If I'm reading a book with many people or characters (as in history books), I bookmark the first reference to 'em. Otherwise, I use the search feature if the character is buried way back in a book and flipping doesn't work.

Never thought to use bookmarks for that. Ingenious!

I find myself too busy using bookmarks to mark pages with errors so I can go back and fix them.

Sadly, if I want to search for something in a book on my PRS-505, I have to hop on the computer and search the PDF file, since the 505 doesn't support search, and is too slow to scan through pages (when a keyword won't do).

Book marking (dead simple on the 505) would help solve the problem, Ed. Quite honestly, though -- with the possible exception of War and Peace and other such epics -- an author and editor who allow you to lose track of a character or sub-plot ain't doing their job properly. Cheers. Neil

Which two stuck in your mind, Format? The strongest and the weakest maybe? And I bet you didn't forget the big bad wolf... and how many years since you read that, eh? That's a prime example of good story telling in my book. Shakespeare later struck me in the same way. Hoots. Neil

The PRS600 handles searching very well and also allows you to bookmark and annotate references in a notes section for easy reference.

As for books where this is useful - The Quincunx and 100 Years of Solitude come to mind.

I just started reading Stieg Larssons trilogy... if i were to bookmark every mentioned suspect, every page of the books would have been filled

And every name search would begin with the letter 'B'.

The 900 does as well - the touch screen makes it so much more convenient!

Edbro,

I don't know anything about the Sony readers. But on the Kindle, you would do the search, browse the results, then click the Back button. That will take you to the exact place from which you started the search. It couldn't be easier.

Like you, I often like to see the first reference to a particular character so that I can remind myself who they are. I find this feature really useful.
