Tolino Shine - a new HD 6", front lit, reader with Android from Germany
A few days ago Nate at the digital reader reported a new e-ink reader from a group of German publishers and a Deutsche Telecom.
It has a front-lit 6 inch HD screen (just like Kindle Paperwhite) with infra red touch, an SD card slot, runs on Android and reads epubs natively. It sells for 99Eur including VAT. There is discussion at the German speaking part of the Mobileread here. They have even discussed posting on the English-speaking forum, but nobody has bothered so far. Sigh (JUST like they used to do with PocketBook readers). I think that this is pretty exciting new reader. It has many features that Kindle Paperwhite lacks and sells here in Europe for a very good price. Specification is here: http://www.tolino.de/tolino-shine/spezifikationen/ Last edited by Dr. Drib; 03-04-2013 at 08:25 AM. |

Well...I suppose they could make it a round button, and have it come in white or black and make it a little shiny...maybe that would make people happy.
My issue with it is that it is an e-ink. Even though the battery life is great (I have 2 PWs) it is just too slow to transition between pages and select different functions, and it's not in color. I travel frequently and can't afford the space to carry a device with only a single purpose. I much prefer a device like an ipad (although I kinda detest the whole apple thing) running a great ereader app (like Marvin). Cheers! |

Thank God it IS! eink, there are already enough tablets out in the wild...
The good thing is it's Android, gives hopes for a good custom ROM to be made. |

If it had Bletooth and support for a keyboard I'd be all over it.

When I mean ugly, I mean that it looks like a Kindle Keyboard where somebody has forgotten the keyboard and they used the space then to position a single button right in the middle of it :-)
Other than that, a Paperwhite for 99 EUR - not bad, but possibly also not good enough. It is a joint venture product from German bookselling chains to counter Amazon's offering. Best regards, Andy |

Also, the price will go from 99 to 119 on May 1. That's $155 at the current exchange rate. ETA: Ugliness continued, see their accessories. Last edited by xendula; 03-05-2013 at 10:26 AM. |

^ Haha, I was actually just looking at the very ugly case.
BTW, the link johnnyb shared adds the following feature: PDF2text (turns text in PDFs into reflowable text) Last edited by xendula; 03-06-2013 at 06:49 PM. |
