Free (DRM-free) Code of the Lifemaker by James P. Hogan [Sci-Fi Robot Alien Contact]
Code of the Lifemaker by the late James P. Hogan (ISFDB, Wikipedia, SFE) is his first contact alien colony science fiction novel set in the near future, where Saturn's moon Titan is inhabited by an intelligent advanced robotic species seeded by the long-ago crash of an alien ship, which mistakes exploring humans for their ancient creators, with potentially disastrous results if it were not for the unrepentant conman who challenges the forces waiting to exploit them, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Phoenix Pick Press.
This is their featured Free eBook of the Month offer for April. It was originally published in 1983 by Ballantine's Del Rey imprint, and has previously been offered as a BOTM freebie in 2011 and again in 2015. Currently free throughout April directly @ the publisher's dedicated promo page (DRM-free ePub & Mobi available worldwide with valid email address, follow the instructions on the page to reset the price to $0.00 at checkout) There's also a tie-in bundle offer for two additional Hogan titles for just $2.99: the 1995 sequel The Immortality Option, and a standalone novel The Multiplex Man, which won the 1993 Prometheus Award for Best Libertarian SF Novel. Both the additional novels have previously been offered as tie-in deals and/or BOTM (and have also been part of Baen bundles when they still had the rights), so you might already have one or both of them, although it seems a pretty good price if you don't. Description Long ago, an alien “searcher” ship flew too close to a star gone nova. Though heavily damaged, the ship landed on one of Saturn’s moons, Titan. Attempting to fulfill its original function of seeding suitable planets for exploitation, the ship creates a bewildering society of self-replicating machines that gives rise to a bizarre ecosystem and culture with intelligent beings and organically grown houses. The intelligent beings are known as Taloids and they have developed their own brand of religion around a mythical figure, a creator of machines, and hence, life. When humans descend from the sky, the Taloids see them as those creators. However, powerful financial and industrial interests are all set to exploit the moon and the Taloids to maximize Titan’s vast production potential and the future for the Taloids looks grim. But they find a champion from an unexpected source. Karl Zambendorf is a “psychic” who has wrangled a place aboard the human mission to Titan. And when all of man’s forces are conspiring to ruthlessly exploit Titan and the Taloids, Zambendorf becomes their champion and in the process challenges not only the religious imperatives of the Taloids, but the core of our own beliefs as well. |

I originally read this one around 1983 -1984. I enjoyed it then and will have to see if it holds up as well now. Thank you for the link.

It's finally working.
Why do I get the impression that this is a one-man operation by some guy who sits around in his underwear in front of a computer in a tight little room at the back of a small apartment, drinking tepid coffee and eating stale beans? And by the way, the title of this book is NOT "The Code of the Lifemaker". It's "Code of the Lifemaker." Last edited by Dr. Drib; 04-03-2017 at 11:23 AM. |

You say that like it's a BAD thing. In those situations, underwear CAN be optional. Let's just say I know this . . .

Just a reminder that this will probably be the last day or two to pick up the freebie or get the tie-in offer, if you're interested.
