For anyone with an iThingy: There is a free Vook book of Bram Stoker's Dracula's Guest. This has interviews, video and pictures that add extra information to the story.

Quote:
"Dracula's Guest" follows an Englishman on a visit to Munich before leaving for Transylvania. Despite several warnings to not stay out late, the young man decides to leave his carriage to explore an "unholy" village. Quickly, he discovers his mistake as his horses are frightened away and he is left alone to find shelter from a snow storm. During this trying experience he finds that he has sought refuge in a cemetery, and he must face the supernatural beings that inhabit the area in order to make it through the long night.

The Turtle Boy found on Amazon US in a search for free horror.

Quote:
Available for the first time on Amazon Kindle, Kealan Patrick Burke's Bram Stoker Award-winning coming of age story The Turtle Boy.

School is out and summer has begun. For eleven year old Timmy Quinn and his best friend Pete Marshall, the dreary town of Delaware Ohio becomes a place of magic, hidden treasure and discovery.

But on the day they encounter a strange young boy sitting on the bank of Myers Pond, a pond playground rumor says may hide turtles the size of Buicks, everything changes.

For it soon becomes apparent that dark secrets abound in the little community, secrets which come cupped in the hands of the dead, and in a heartbeat, Timmy and Pete's summer of wonder becomes a season of terror, betrayal and murder.

Free novella by Michael McBride - The Calm Before the Storm. Previously published by Thunderstorm Books. Also includes a bonus story, Diseaseater and some excerpts.

Quote:
Dr. Lauren Allen, an investigator for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is summoned by the FBI to a small town in Georgia, where she finds bodies scattered around a circus big top. It's even worse inside. Nearly three hundred men, women, and children are dead in the stands surrounding a stage littered with the corpses of performers and animals alike. Every one of the victims has been stung repeatedly by what appears to be a species of bee, and yet there isn't a single insect carcass to be found. It's as though a swarm of unprecedented size simply materialized from nowhwere...and then vanished again.

Dr. Allen soon discovers that the massacre at the circus is only a trial run for an attack of unimaginable proportions. Can she and the FBI track down the unknown terrorists that command the swarm before thousands more lives are lost?

She's going to need to learn everything she can about this mysterious and deadly new species, and she's already running out of time...

The method of our ultimate extinction is hiding in plain sight.

Chimera-44 by Christopher Eger from Necro Publications is free at Smashwords. It is a short story prequel to Last Stand on Zombie Island, which appears to be $4.99 pretty much everywhere (less with a coupon at Kobo).

Quote:
Sundra Trench – Indian Ocean

A Russian research vessel is studying giant amphipods that live in one of the deepest parts of the sea. Or so the world thinks…

All the crew wants to do is get back to Jakarta and some well-deserved shore leave. But something is quickly approaching the rear of their ship. The crew will soon find out that their shore leave is canceled and the Hell brewing in the deepest bowls of their ship will soon emerge and bring with it the destruction of humanity as we know it.

Chimera-44 is the exciting prequel to the hit novel Last Stand on Zombie Island by Christopher Eger. See how the end of the world began.

Repeat freebie by Wayne Hixon from Grindhouse Press - Vampires in Devil Town (Vampires in Devil Town Book One).

Quote:
One evening Rachel Stokes is yanked from her bed and dragged into a black van by two young abductors. They refer to her as a chosen sacrifice and her mind races, wondering where they might be taking her. She thinks she knows. There’s a house located in a hollow of rural Lynchville. It’s called the Sad House, a place of legend. Rumors say it appears and disappears. Even worse than the house are the people who live in it. They could be vampires. They could just be ghosts with teeth. They’ve come after Rachel before and she narrowly escaped. And now they’ve come back to finish what they started in this horrifying and suspenseful novel by first time author Wayne Hixon.

Another repeat free novella and short story from Michael McBride - Brood XIX.

Quote:
It’s been two years since that fateful night. Two years since Vanessa Snow’s husband was killed and her daughter was abducted. Two years and still she refuses to accept that her only child, Emma, is truly gone. The last thing Emma made for her—a teddy bear molded from mud and weeds—serves as a constant reminder of Vanessa’s loss and provides the motivation for her to persevere.

Until a young girl’s remains are unearthed from the nearby swamp, bringing the search to a tragic end.

But hope can be found in the least likely of places. When the teddy bear erupts with insect life after years of dormancy, Vanessa sees it as a sign and embarks upon a perilous quest to prove that Emma is still alive. With the help of her brother, a sheriff’s deputy, Vanessa must discover the secret behind her daughter’s disappearance…and Brood XIX.

BONUS MATERAL

*A bonus short story: "The Generosity of Strangers"

An other repeat freebie novella and short story from Michael McBride: Zero and short story The Hands of God.

Quote:
When Brian Niemand accepts a position as a research assistant in the theoretical physics department at the university, he has no idea that he’s about to become a part of one of the greatest scientific discoveries of all time. The implications are staggering, but such knowledge always comes at a price, and as Brian finds out, the cost is measured in lives. Where did the project get its test subject, an amputated leg, and what’s inside Brian’s house that stalks him at night? The answers are buried where only he can exhume them, but when he finds himself surrounded by a series of brutal slayings, he learns that before he can take the first step to saving his own life, he must go back to Zero.

BONUS MATERIAL

*An exclusive short story: The Hands of God

In case anyone is unfamiliar with this, it is the book the Hellraiser series of movies was based on. I highly recommend this as a very scary book.

Today's free novella from Michael McBride is Blindspot.

Quote:
At 2:31 a.m., seismic monitoring stations in China and South Korea detect a magnitude-4 event consistent with a nuclear detonation in the southeastern corner of North Korea, within the Korean Demilitarized Zone. With the threat of full-scale war escalating by the minute, the United Nations Security Council dispatches an elite unit of peacekeepers to cross the border, penetrate the cloud of dust hanging over the site, and determine the exact nature of the seismic disturbance. What they find triggers a series of events that culminates in a civilian biomedical engineer boarding a transport carrier at Ft. Detrick, Maryland, bound for the Far East.

His name is Dr. Parker Ramsey and he is uniquely qualified for this mission.
He is the brains behind a secret project—Code Name Hindsight—developed under the oversight of the United States Army Medical Research and Materiel Command. Hindsight has never been field-tested, but with global catastrophe looming on the horizon, the only chance of averting it lies in utilizing the project’s extraordinary capabilities. If it works, Dr. Ramsey will be able to unravel the mystery behind the detonation and identify the responsible party.

For, thanks to Hindsight, Dr. Ramsey will be able to see something that no one has ever seen before…

He’ll be able to see the moment of death through the eyes of the dead.

If he’s able to survive long enough to do so.

Another free novella from Michael McBride - Xibalba.

Quote:
A scientific expedition into a godforsaken jungle opens the gate to hell itself.
FYI -

Quote:
Xibalba, roughly translated as "place of fear", is the name of the underworld in Maya mythology, ruled by the Maya death gods and their helpers. In 16th-century Verapaz, the entrance to Xibalba was traditionally held to be a cave in the vicinity of Cobán, Guatemala. According to some of the K'iche' Maya presently living in the vicinity, the area is still associated with death. Cave systems in nearby Belize have also been referred to as the entrance to Xibalba.

The Desert by Bryon Morrigan is free from Permuted Press.

Quote:
Give up trying to leave. There’s no way out.
Stay up high. You are safer up here.
Stay out of the fog.
Do not go into the hole.

Those are the final words in a bizarre journal left by the last apparent survivor of a platoon that disappeared during the Iraqi invasion in 2003. Seven years later, Captain Henderson and Specialist Densler realize that what happened to the "Lost Platoon" is now happening to them. Trapped in the middle of the desert, they must confront the horrifying creatures responsible for their misfortune, or risk suffering the same fate as that of the soldiers before them.
