Debian on a kobo : Impressive

I am really tempted to buy a kobo mini to tweak with it ...
What I really miss with the kobo is :
- folder hierarchy
- RSS newsreader (offline mode)
- manga/comics viewing

With debian it is pretty sure it should be ok (well in coolreader for kobo too I gues).

How about the usuability of calibre in "Koboian" ?

Would gestikk (https://launchpad.net/gestikk) work on the kobo mini ? That would be great for switching full screen ^^

Yes. It all works. However I would like to have bigger screen than 6''. 5'' in kobo mini would be definitely too small for me - I would definitely consider to by Aura HD if you can compile kernel yourself - to have bigger screen, resolution and more memory.

Great idea!

Works really good except it's not easy to exit from fullscreen mode (you have to hit Esc key - and minimizing it with home button doesn't work like with other apps - maybe it behaves different in the newest version - there is pretty old one included in debian repository). Configuring gesture for Esc could help.

If you set up a debian chroot on your Kobo, such as this thread details, you can install a gameboy emulator with "apt-get install gnuboy-x"
You can run it but it's totally unusable because of too low frame-rate in gray scale mode. I hope to implement automatic switch to dithered black & white refresh mode on areas with motion someday. Playing games and watching animations will be possible then.

I did looked again at mouse gesture

This one seems to be quite better http://pengpod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4489 than the previous one.

I wish my new "experimental" kobo will arrivce soon (cheap one : 50€)!

So i'll see how it works

I would like to see if something like a mail retrival client could be setup ^^

PS : will it be possible to have a detail of the needed task to perform in order to be able to build the SD image ? Thanks

It's awesome: http://awesome.naquadah.org/

Its configuration (and menu) is located at ~/.config/awesome/rc.lua. I know its not easy to edit that file but for now I don't know better alternative.

Hello

Would a freedesktop compliant plug in would do the trick ?

http://debian-facile.org/viewtopic.php?id=4029
(sorry it is in french ....but the main stuff is in the git )

Marek, do you think it would be possible to provide us the informlation on how to create the SD card ?
I'm absolutly not proficient with that kinf of work:s
it's not urgent ...but if I want to changes some stuff in the kernel ....that would be of great help for a lot a people I guess,

PS : depending on how i manage to make it work on the mini, i'll perhaps go for a aura HD

Thumbs up debian + kobo = debo

It is - no small thing
to get, a small thing
to work like a bigger thing.

Here are some pics of my kobo-mini
as it now works with debian
(version is latest "testing") OS

[screenshots are taken by the kobo-mini]

===

My daughter commented that,
"all these black screens look like
the monolith in the movie "2001",
black tombstone trans-ceivers talking
to, who knows who, what or where ...

- Hence the choice of image for - startup/power_off

===

- 16Gb partitioned w/space for 2nd (future *nix OS)
- boot to "kobo or debian" screen in < 5 sec
- boot debian OS in < 10 sec
- web browser boot < 5 sec
- high contrast theme/icons
- optimized fonts for EInk screen
- (most) color info removed for high contrast text
- xfce desktop
- ad blocking via auto update/hosts file
- synaptic package manager
- custom useragent for mobile sites
- news feed reader, email, ebook reader ... etc

- Panel:
. clock
. system menu
. internet browser
. news/rss reader
. email
. ebook reader
. file manager
. editor
. virtual keyboard
. wifi ON/OFF
. terminal
. status cpu/ram/swap
. windows active

&

a working torrent downloader

* Tip:
- opening the terminal (with it's background set to white)
- then minimizing windows (with desktop background black)
refreshes the screen.

I installed the image that Marek Gibek provided on the mini.
I only replaced one line with the hex editor.
I worked like a charm -- dual boot!
(linux boot) ssh and ftp did not work, however vncserver did. (on the koboreader boot, ssh and telnet were OK)

I would like to get USB host mode, so I recompiled kernel and injected it using dd if=uImage of=/dev/mmcblk0 bs=512 seek=2048

I even used the config.gz that Marek provided (to check)
but touchinput is not functional anymore.

Any ideas?

Tip of the day: Not all roads are straight lines ...

Well I was following the "GPS" thingy and am now in a corn field.

I've driven my $50 tablet (kablet, dablet?) into the ditch and lost touch screen function.

It looked good and worked fine until I went "off road" like on tv ads.

===

Wireless surfing seems to use about 350ma so 2 1/2 hours to dead dog.

Screen shot of gparted shows very little space is needed
- debian rootfs 5GB available used only 2.43GB.

Response is slow (as you would expect but still usable.

I expect best added value will be
- debian side to collect (and maybe reformat w/ calibre?)
&
converting web page/articles to epub (w/ dotepub?)
then
epubs moved to kobo side for
best reading experience.

If you use the device within it's limits it works well.

It's like ...

while you can get a fat old man into a bikini "speedo" it's never a beautiful sight.

Midori browser seems very good and even synaptic was usable.

Some apps (like synaptic etc) may need internal icon tweaks to get visibility up to standard ...

I think an ideal format for kobo + debian would be a minimal debian install onto a 4gb SD chip (the chip inside current kobo-mini production) ...

All practical apps (for small EInk screen would be possible) no extra chip to buy) ...

Partitions remain as original so that kobo upgrades would still work
- just expand space for debian (there is ample room).

Solution is minimaly intrusive and entirely in software alteration.

Just my 2 cents

How to make good better?

Consider ...

(Smart) Phone:

- $$$$
- color
- Reading experience?
Poor/compromised - too small
- real browser?

Tablet:

- $$$
- color
- Reading experience?
Compromised - too big
- real browser?

Kobo-Mini:

- $40
- EInk in your pocket
- Reading experience?
Excellent

BUT

Kobo-Mini lacks a web browser with

1) User Customized CSS for reasonable legibility
2) Ability to download ebooks
3) method to convert web articles to epub
4) automatically drop 2) & 3) into kobo library

? Question ?

What is BEST way to overcome road block of the
(crippled) kobo browser ?
(And get the world of print
into your pocket?)

Fix it?
Replace it?
Install 2nd linux OS?
Other ... ?

Regarding the browser it is possible to take a look at :
http://pandoralive.info/?p=143

LightWeight2 if available could be interresting

I guess it is possible to use calibre to convert a webpage to an epub. If that is possible, it should be possible to create a script that download the current page and process it into epub ?

The ideal would be a web browser that use a "paged" displaying of each page (ie not scrolling) ....I haven't foudn one yet (perhaps chromewith that plugin https://chrome.google.com/webstore/d...igoaecbmbnmfkc but that may be too heavy for the kobo)

Will you be able to share your kobo mini image ?

Edit : if you are confortable with it, you can try : https://trac.enlightenment.org/e/wiki/Eve#no1, it should be more confortable for browsing
