The color Trion eink devices that are coming out are SLOW to update the screen and they are NOT 1600x1200 resolution. They are in fact 800x600 resolution. So the DPI is rather poor.

Ectaco has a bad habit of LYING (yes, that is the correct word) about the specifications of their devices. Yes, the B&W layer is 1600x1200. But when you add the Triton color layer on top, you need multiple pixels to generate the color. So that drops the effective resolution to 1600x1200. Now if Ectaco had gone with a large screen 1600x1200 B&W eink device, then they would be doing well. As it is, it's going to be slow and it's really only so-so.

I found this german article: http://www.netbooknews.de/26281/hanv...y-im-hands-on/
Look at these images (EXIF timestamp 10.11.2010), there you can see in no uncertain terms 800x600 pixels.

Tomorrow starts the CES 2012. Among the exhibitors are E Ink Corporation and Ectaco. Maybe we get some new videos or even some enhanced developments (especially from E Ink) to see.

One thing I expect to see from E Ink is a screen with a built-in solar panel layer behind the display. We are headed for self powered devices that don't need external charging. Flex screens are another area.

It does look like the power requirements of a dedicated simplified eReader could someday
get that low. But keep in mind:

1 Square Inch = 0.00064516 Square Meters

The max solar energy reaching the surface of the earth is ~1kw (1,361w)per square Meter.

My 5" eReader = 12 square inches = 0.00774192 square Meters

0.00774192 x 1000W = 7.74192W

About 8W, sounds good right? But, the drop off from perfect collection conditions is
steep and no solar panel tech is 100% efficient. The PV sites will claim 10 or 11 Watts
per square foot of an array. (That is the most reputable of them.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_cell#Efficiency

Notice that the best cells, outside the lab, are 35% efficient or less.

.35 x 8W = 2.8W, if the panel could intercept the max total solar.

My battery pack holds a little over 11wh so if we said it was 12wh and the panel could
provide 3W then four hours in perfect sun should charge the device.

So, maybe.

Luck;

I did notice the 800x600 resolution when looking at the video and seeing the graphics. It's just that noticeable. I think Ectaco would have been much better off going with B&W at 1600x1200. That would have been very nice. Instead what we are getting is just so-so.

So, since May 2011 there is an E Ink display with the b/w resolution of 2400 x 1650 px, so actually one could build a color device with the resolution of today's b/w ereaders 1200 x 825 = 2400/2 x 1650/2 (reduction because of the 2x2 color filter matrix) :

When did the one they are now using on JetBook Colour showed up on the market?
By looking at that you can anticipate how long it will take them to come with the new one, although that is not accurate because they might just wait to get their money back from the ones they just launched ... :-)

Somewhere I read, that the Hanvon E920 with its 1600x1200 b/w display was announced in november 2010. Maybe it would take roughly a year to introduce a color display based on a HD b/w display.
That would fit the speculations about new color devices coming out this year: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...3&postcount=53

Actually the current color display is based on the Hanvon B/W display. It is exactly the same only the display has color filters over the top of the pixels. That is how the 800x600 came into being. To do a 1600x1200 pixel color display would require 3200x2400 display. I do not believe the technology is there yet to provide this increased pixel density. Only after the technology exists can you start a clock on how long before a product. You need to read our wiki on how all this works. Begin with the article on E Ink and it will guide you to the article on color and high density displays.

DaleDe, you just misunderstood the whole conversation. I posted, that since may 2011 there is a b/w 2400x1650 display and wondered, how long it would take to bring out a color display based on it, which would obviously have 1200x825.
PF4Mobile suggested to look, how long it took to bring out a color display based on the Hanvon E920 b/w 1600x1200 display, which has 800x600.
So I don't need to read the wiki, you just need to read the posts carefully.

Is 800x600 enough for reading clearly books and scanned magazines and why resolution is being advertised as 1600x1200? Is it 1600x1200 subpixels which effectively is 800x600?

Well, I think you should read the wiki

This image shows, how it works: A color pixel consists of 2x2 b/w pixels with a color layer on top, thus halving the pure b/w resolution. Obviously Ectaco tells only the b/w resolution, whereas Hanvon (which jetBook color is based on) itself stated 800x600 color resolution in these pictures.

Great explanation post! The use of the wired.com picture is the perfect complement
to your text. I can't imagine a more effective explanation to this thorny concept.
