It'll be nice to see PD versions of the Nordhoff and Hall Bounty trilogy. Orwell, Sabatini and Lewis are the other biggies to me. But 2022 seems to be so far away...

Of course even if a country is Life Plus 70 there can be all kinds of exceptions. A lot of works in the US from certain periods are 95 years after publication for example. I don't know if any other countries are as complex as US copyright can be though.
A good reference for US folks... https://copyright.cornell.edu/publicdomain |

The names I listed are there because they are PD here in Australia already. Aus was +50 until 2005, then +70, but the new regime was not retrospective so any author in the +50 PD didn't go back into copyright for 20 years. Effectively, the cutoff for PD has been 1954; any author who died in 1955 onwards was copyright, anyone before is PD.

All of these authors would have been in the public domain in the US and elsewhere by now had they not retroactively lengthened the copyright term after their deaths. Of course, nothing "promotes the progress of science and useful arts" (to use the phrase from the US constitution) more than increasing the copyright term after they're dead.
Australia won't see any new public domain works for another 7 years, and 2019 will probably be the last year Canada will see new public domain works for the next two decades. |

Or, alternatively, Canada may follow the route the UK took when we changed our copyright term from life+50 to life+70 and renew copyright protection on those works which fell once more into life+70 protection.

Note that none of this is applicable to you. These works will not be in the US public domain in the stated years.

If Canada retroactively returns the works from authors who died between 50 and 70 years ago to copyright in 2019, it will still be twenty years before they see any new books in the public domain. Granted, they would see some formerly public domain books re-enter the public domain in the next 20 years.

Just out of interest, when did the UK change the copyright length?

Surely it should be called "death plus 70" because "life plus 70" suggests date of birth, rather than date of death.
Just splitting hairs. |
