In the Mountains was written as a diary in a chalet in Switzerland shortly after Elizabeth left Lord Russell, and published anonymously in 1920. The main protagonists are the diarist (who was initially profoundly depressed) and two English widowed sisters, one of whom is unable to return to England because she had married two German men.
