series numbering when there are 2 books in one

what do folks do when the publisher "helpfully" combines 2 volumes into a single e book.

e.g. Philip Jose Farmer Riverworld series - (original paperback) titles 1 & 2 are now reissued & combined into a single epub.

so my series numbers look like 1,3,4,5, as I can't put non-numeric data in the series column ?

none of the obvious solutions appeal e.g. renumber the whole series & get confused, enter 1st volume as 1.2

Thanks, just noticed that Farmer's World of Tiers is finally coming out as ebook too... about time. I lent out my paper copy and never got it back...

As for combined books, you can split them, if the books are not DRMed. Or you can create empty ones (placeholders) with description where to find the book in its metadata or title, like "book 2 is included in book 1" etc. so you know where to look

I used to use metadata to track them but in the last few days have started using JimmXinus excellent EpubSplit plugin for calibre to slice the books apart.

I haven't decided what to do about whole series omnibus though, they may be handled individually.

Edit: I don't know if the plugin works on DRMed books but some, um, preprocessing can fix that.
