Preparing for the day.

My sister has taken this week off work to do things around the house. Yesterday we put together a box to store they pillows of the outdoor furniture in. It took us all afternoon to put it together.

Today and tomorrow are reserved for the stairs. It still has the dark grey carpet on it from the previous home owners. And it doesn't fit with how we decorated the rest of the house. So we'll be removing it and replacing it with a sand coloured carpet or runner. Luckily the previous owners didn't glue the carpet down (like my sister thought) but used double sided tape. It's removed easily except for glue residue from the tape in the area where you step on the tread. It's a nasty glue, we tried several things and all of them do soften the glue but it's so sticky that when you try to wipe or scrape it off (even with a sharp scraper) you just smear the glue over the tread. So we got two more things we're going to try out today.

Other plans for this week are going to Ikea (on the bank holiday Thursday, help me!), to a plant nursery and my father's going to come to help with going to the recycle station (his car is bigger) and to help with a couple of other things.

I'm looking forward to Saturday, when my sister is meeting up with a friend and I can relax. Maybe go to the market and get some snacks and treat myself to some new pens.

Thinking wayyyyy outside the box, on the carpet tape glue: if it comes to this, maybe just smear the glue (as you said it happening) so the surface is smooth, then cover it with brown paper. Then put your new carpet on top of it.

Okay, probably a dreadful idea. I'll let myself out!

The top stairs, to the attic, cleaned up fairly nicely. It looks like before the grey carpet the stairs had those half round tiles on it. I got 99.9% of the glue of those off (beneath it was paint). However, for the grey carpet they used tape for the bigger surfaces of the risers and the top of the treads. But they used a nasty glue on the bottom of the overhang of the tread and a strip at the top of the riser. That was impossible to remove with with cleaning solutions and scrapers.

The bottom stairs is a different story. It seems like it's had various carpets over time and there are several layers of glue which couldn't be removed with the tools we had. There were still some staples left from a previous carpet. My sister did her best, but it's still a bit tacky.

My sister wanted to get chemicals to remove the glue and a good sander. But I talked her out of that for now. On Saturday morning we got an appointment at the store where we're going to buy the carpet and they'll also install it. They'll send someone by to take measurements and then we can ask if we need to do more to prepare the stairs or if it's good enough as it is now. My sister has a tendency to go a bit overboard and do more than is needed. That happened last year when we were preparing the walls and floors for redecorating. She doesn't mind, but I think it's a waste of time, energy and money (or as my grandfather used to say: I'm rather lazy than tired).

But for now it'll be a more relaxed couple of days; this morning we're going to a plant nursery, this afternoon go to the recycle station and drop some things off at the thrift store and tomorrow morning we've got the appointment at the flooring store.

Hopefully, you have checked and are dropping stuff off at the thrift store that they will be able to resell. One of my great niblings worked at a local thrift store last summer and some of the stuff that people drop off belongs in the trash bin. One example was one couple that dropped off 2 boxes full of worn out shoes (seams ripped, holes in the soles, looked like they'd been worn for a Tough Mudder event, etc.).

Yes.
There was some discussion with my father about a couple of items, though. He thought several items on the throw away pile were perfectly fine to be donated. Seven year old drinking glasses that were starting to get scratched up and two recycle bins, also seven years old, which were dirty and scratched.

The donated stuff was mostly decorative things and two small light fixtures. All were in good/new condition, but we just don't have space for them.

Today's rant: my sister has discovered cross stitch patterns on Etsy. Note: she doesn't cross stitch so she wants me to do those for her. One: I don't want to do only projects for her. Our tastes differ and whilst I don't mind doing a cross stitch I don't really like the design of every once in a while I don't want to do those almost exclusively. Second: I don't do CS project which use metallic thread (I've read horror stories about metallic thread) and I don't do CS projects with beading (just seems to fiddly to me) and nearly all the patterns she like uses either one or both of them.

We went to the flooring store today, and I was right about that the stairs as they are are fine for installing new carpet. We've borrowed some samples to see what we want and in three weeks someone's going to come by to take measurements. The carpet won't be installed until some time in August at the earliest. We want to get the rest of the woodwork in the stairwell painted (sides, newel post, railing) before that, but we've got time for that now.

I'm glad I was able to convince my sister to hold off on doing with the stair earlier this week.

Tomorrow is the day I've been least looking forward to all week: I'm going to have to move my mother's iTunes library from her old laptop (crapware infested HP that takes almost half an hour to boot) and move it to the laptop we used in the store (blissfully clean of crapware and thus fast). It'll take a lot of patience, swearing and frustration, with the crapware popping up randomly all the time.

I'm heading for a nice little walk to pick up some cuts of game meat from a local butcher. Well, my local butcher was closed down by the landlord evicting everyone so he can raise the rent, but the next local one.
