Twain, Mark: Saint Joan of Arc (Illustrated). v1. 05 Jan 2015

Saint Joan of Arc
by Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens) (1835–1910)

With four full-page color illustrations by Howard Pyle (1853–1911)

First published in 1904. This book is in the public domain world-wide, because the author and the illustrator died more than 100 years ago.

Mark Twain is most noted for his novels, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), the latter often called “the Great American Novel.”

This essay was written in 1899, intended to be an introduction to an English translation of the Official Record of the Trials and Rehabilitation of Joan of Arc. (I have not been able to find any information whether said publication ever took place.) It appeared in Harper’s Monthly Magazine, December 1904; and in several Twain collections. In 1919, Saint Joan of Arc (supplemented with the Preface and Conclusion from Twain’s Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc) was published as a book in Harper & Bros. “Illustrated Gift Edition” series. This ebook is based on that edition.

This should be considered as a companion piece to “Personal Recollections.” Here Twain provides an overview of the life and military career of Joan of Arc, and outspokenly criticizes the political forces and maneuvers that resulted in her execution at the tender age of nineteen.
----------

Text and illustrations were obtained from archive.org (scan of the 1919 “Illustrated Gift Edition”). Due to copyright restrictions, I could not include the margin decorations by Wilfred John Jones (1888–1968). Cover art is an adaptation of the dust jacket for the Gift Edition. I formatted punctuation, diacritics, and italics; cleaned and enhanced images. Chapter heads and image captions are cross-linked to in-line Table of Contents. Decorative fonts are embedded.
----------

I hope you take the opportunity to view the illustrations in color. Enjoy the book!
