How about a Dog Philosopher?

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein.

A wonderful book about a dog who believes that when dogs die they are reincarnated as humans. He can't wait to die because he intends to come back as a race car driver. But first, he has a family to take care of.

My description sounds sappy as all hell, but the book isn't. It's a well written story about a dog and his human family and his reasons for his loyalty.

Your title alone summed up the book for me. As soon as I saw it I thought of this book which I also read and enjoyed.

It reminds me of a book I enjoyed Heart of a Dog by Mikhail Bulgakov.

It's about a surgeon who implants the testicles and pituitary gland of a man into a dog. The dog develops into a scoundrel.

It looks interesting. But I wonder what 'a fierce parable on the Russian revolution' is? Copy writers! Sheesh!

It's free here. Whether or not it's legal depends on where you are.
