Amazon is not evil after all. Maybe?

Hi All.. if you haven't seen the daily show interview with Jeff Bezos on the K2 check out this thread.

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...ght=daily+show

I just wanted to discuss one thing that he said.

"It is up to the publishers to specify if they want DRM or not."

So... that is NOT an Amazon mandate. You heard it from the horses mouth.

It should make you all see that Amazon is NOT as evil as you thought. Now, if he would sell Kindle books to anyone... at least the DRM free ones. Perhaps if the DRM free ones were available to everybody and more people bought them, publishers would see that DRM free was the way to sell more ebooks.

That is what Jeff Bezos says, but it isn't what Amazon does. All ebooks that come originally from MobiPocket (an Amazon company) must have DRM, because MobiPocket is in the DRM business and has no procedure to accept DRM-free ebooks. All ebooks that come from the Kindle's Digital Text Platform (DTP) must use DRM. Publishers who never use DRM (e.g. O'Reilly) have DRM on their Kindle ebooks, presumably because they were given no choice in the matter. The only DRM-free ebooks I am aware of are the “extra large print” ebooks from the Virginia M. Woolf Foundation. Since there is no indication on Amazon’s web site about DRM status, the only way to tell is to try to open them. So there could be others here and there in the 200,000 ebooks, but it is a vanishingly small percentage of the total.

Have you tried using Amazon DTP https://dtp.amazon.com/mn/signin to publish your own book? Do you have an option to check to sell your book without DRM?

That's not quite the case. I've bought a number of DRM free ebooks from Amazon. Mostly older books, but I have bought them. BTW, O'Reilly does indeed use a form of DRM. They sale their books as protected PDF's which have the purchaser's email printed on every page.

Yep. Bezos is being disingenuous (or is actually unaware of what his minions are doing). Actions speak louder than words.

Bob, it would be worthwhile for you to read the pertinent paragraph from the Amazon contract, which can be found in Joshua Tallent's piece on Teleread.

This is the problem with Amazon -- the PR department says one thing and the legal department another. But it is the legal department that prevails. At least one publisher has said that there is no negotiation about DRM with Amazon.

You know I never thought Amazon was evil...until I heard Besos laugh. That is sheer evil.

I was surprised about the DRM comment, too. And now I can't tell.

I didn't think his laugh was evil. It was the CLAPPING that was evil.

David Rothman has an entry on Teleread related to his experiences trying to get his book available in Mobipocket format without DRM.
